Are you interested in Registry sets just for the fun of it, or to perhaps make a profit from the set's later sale, or both? Edired to add: I would appreciate it if you told why you voted the way you did.

The biggest advantage for myself was and is all of the like collectors a person gets to meet through Registry participation. I never would have met the people without the registry.

People and Fun would be the answer. If profit comes, so be it.

Looks like I'm with the majority, so far. I vote number 2.

I've always treated coin collecting as a hobby. I profited from the sale of my two cents, and a couple of other coins I've sold along the way. To me, collecting is what it's about. It's fun, if you want to you can learn alot, and you can meet people.

In the end, it will hopefully be profitable. But, hopefully, the end won't be for some time. image

If I don't profit from my coins, my estate will.

    Edited to add:

I'm primarily a type collector. So a sudden downturn in a couple or even a few series shouldn't affect me as much.

    Hello Mercateers!

I'm collecting these because I always wanted to have a high grade set of Mercs since I first started collecting them in junior high about 1967. I'm hoping that the collection will give me years of fun, many new friends, and intend to sell them to help finance my 8 year old son's college education in about 10 years. Thus the set name "Nick's College Fund".

Let me add one other item that is important also.

Some very good Dealers have also been met. Trust me on this, they know if you are in the Registry program and sometimes will give you a little break on a coin you are seeking for your set or atleast let you know the coin is available.

    One of the responses:

I wonder if those same people who answered that would feel the same way if they were:

  • I'm in it for the fun! I have lost lots of money upgrading my Roosie sets and am still having a ball! Yeah, I'd prefer making a profit but the loss isn't killing me. I sure hope I'm not in the minority....

    I voted #2 fun/profit.

I think the registry is a great idea to seee other peoples collections and collecting habits. & of course, making a profit later on is great also.

For me its a release from the everyday grind, I agree with Ken if a profit comes from it, that will be a nice bonus, but for most collectors if we make a profit on one coin we have surely lost more on another!!!!

Just for fun. Mine will never be a #1 set. Hopefully a top 20. Profit doesn't enter in. I've sold some coins to upgrade, made money and lost money. It's all in a days collecting. I don't believe being in the registry race will make my coins any more valuable though.

  • I am just a compulsive collector. I have only been collecting coins for two years now, however I have been collecting baseball cards and comic books since the 1976 and never sold one. I have always liked history and I guess this is just my way of keeping a piece of history.
