Steve, I believe that is a pattern which is often, if not usually found with a "wood-grain" effect to the color. I think the surfaces are probably ok but that you are seeing the typical, uneven color/toning pattern (no pun intended).
Edited to add: I still wouldn't recommend that someone buy it (or other high priced coins) uncertified, unless there is a full return privilege offered by a well known, reputable seller AND the buyer is expert.
Emailed the seller when it was first listed - he says the reverse picture is the more representative color of the entire coin.
