Superior March 25th Auction

Board Members:

The last couple of days have included a fair amount of speculation and comment about the future of our company, and I have been inundated with calls and emails from well wishers who imagine me sailing off into the sunset. (Thanks, by the way!) In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. SUPERIOR SPORTS IS ALIVE AND WELL, AND IS SIMPLY UNDERGOING AN OWNERSHIP CHANGE. We're holding a telephone and Internet auction, which will close on Thursday, March 25th and will include one of the best collections of cards seen in some time. The purpose of this post isn't to plug the auction, but simply to let all readers of this know that, while there are a few structural changes occuring, we are still here in Traverse City, Michigan, doing very well, and very much looking to the future.

Some of you newer collectors may not realize this, but in fact Superior has been in business since 1979 and has only had an affiliation with CU since 1999, which obviously saw periods of great growth on our part but has become evident to many, both inside and outside the company, that we are better off as separate entities. Our best wishes for the future go out to CU and all of its remaining divisions.

I invite any and all of you to participate in our March auction and stand welcoming to everyone with questions on how to participate.

Thanks for your time!

Geez Chris, this kind of blatant, shameless plug is the kind of lowlife thing that people have come to expect from people like me who are trying to hawk their cards. Well, at least I am in good company now.

Chris .... that is great news!

Good to hear from you and am looking forward to your next auction. Having trust in the people who run the various auctions is very important to me and Im thrilled to hear that you will be staying on board!

Thanks for the update. Will we still be receiving catalogs? I haven't received mine yet, but there's still a month until the auction closes.
  • Gemint :

Yes - catalogs (hopefully one per person!) will be mailed around March 1st and the whole auction will be online at www.superiorsports.com on March 1st.

PS - I think there may even be a PSA 8 '69 Brock in there for you....

Vargha and John - thanks also.

    Chris,

Off the top of your head, do you know if there will be any big name hockey cards in the auction?

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Thanks Chris. I have a nice '69 Brock 8 but I do have a soft spot for vintage wax and high grade sets from the late 60s. Hopefully I'll see something along those lines in there. Of course I will enjoy seeing how strong the Brock ends at.
  • Chris,

Which cards of the greatest Post-World War 2 baseball rookie set will be in the March auction (part 1)?

    outerbankyank on eBay!

  • 1420 (Neal): That's a good question. The answer is both Yes and No. We will not be posting an inventory on our site for casual review and purchase but we'll always maintain an inventory, specifically for filling holes in people's sets or collection. My best advice would be for any collector with specific wants to make them known to me so it will be easy for me to know what to pull out of deals that I buy to offer to them. IE.. if I know that you still need a '68 Rose then you'll get the first call when I buy one...

shagrotn77: Sorry - it's kind of weak on hockey. There's a Topps Gretzky rookie in 9, an '82/83 OPC Coffey in 10 and a '83/84 Gretzky in 10. Nothing to speak of in vintage.

Gemint: No vintage wax (see our diabolical Windy City competitors for that) but there are several nice '60's and early '70's Topps sets in mid and high grade....

Skycap: "The Rookies" section of the auction is superb. In addition to part of the Matteson collection, there are several other mid and high grade keys from the post-war era, like Berra (9), Musial (9), Mantle (8), Wynn (9), Snider (9), Ford (8), Mays (9), Banks (9), Aaron (8), Kaline (9), Killebrew (9), Drysdale (9), F. Robby (9), Gibson (8), Yaz (9), Seaver, Fisk, Winfield, Yount, Ripken, Gwynn, Mattingly etc. in Baseball, and Baugh (8), Motley (9), Graham (8), Hirsch(8), Landry (9), Gifford (8), Starr, Brown, Namath, Payton, Staubach, Montana etc. in Football. Basketball rookies include Chamberlain, West, Bird/Magic and Jordan. Hope this helps.....

if you are still looking for a 79 OPC WG PSA 9 rookie, i heard that scerb13 on ebay has one. you might try contacting him to see if he still has it.
  • Chris -

Please send me the master catalog with legions of Wilson Franks for the next auction. However you can send the abridged version (without the Wilsons) to Texas, New York, Michigan, and Los Angeles to save on postage. image

    Goodriddance,

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, I am definitely still looking for the WG 9. I found one at AJ's, but it's overpriced and not that nice either. What do you know about scerb13?
