Postal theft: very serious issue

Liteside thread.

Apparantly since 9/11, the use of scanners by postal service employees has led to increases in thefts, as it's easy to see inside the packages. This has been occuring with alarming frequency, even with registered packages.

What are we to do to try to solve the problem?

Contact the Postal Inspection Service. If they see a pattern they can get on the case quickly.

This reminds me of the mess that's been going on with airport inspectors stealing a lot of stuff out of luggage that they scan.

It's almost impossible to fire anyone at the Postal Service. About the only thing you can do to get fired is walk into a post office and start shooting, and even then it takes years. image

THIS paranoid begins to think of wrapping slabs or 2x2's in tinfoil before shipping.

Could cut it out like a GUN (kidding, kidding)

Wrap aluminum foil around the coin & a odd shaped piece of cardboard.

Not surprising. I think that's what happened to that Cuban gold coin. I think someone here has figured out what is usually in our packages and may begin helping themselves from now on. I don't ask for much from the government, but I'd appreciate it if they wouldn't steal my coins....

Can the scanners really see banknotes too? Recently I sent a letter with some cash in it, and I'd taped the envelope with wide postal tape, and from the looks of it, a side seam had been steamed open. Nothing was taken, however, fortunately, but I can't imagine that the opened side seam could possibly have been done unintentionally, which means someone opened it purposely to loot it. Perhaps they ran out of time, because the notes were wrapped in different pieces of paper.

This whole situation is very disturbing. It's even easier to see coins, so what's stopping our wonderful government workers from helping themselves to everything they see?? What has happened to privacy? What would Ben Franklin think of the postal service he so dearly wanted for the citizens of the country?

OK then, we need to import some Iranian mullahs to work the USPS's IG department image

Does foil really work that well?? Could try cigarette tins.. or pad the coin itself and then stick it in a bag full of washers and screws, etc.. then just label it 'truthfully' image

The foil suggestion sounds like a good idea but would the x-ray scanner thing see through the foil and would they still see a coin?

There's really not much that can be done with this situation. Very often, the problem is on the receiving end , which is why it's very important to establish a friendship with the local mailman. And don't forget the tips (about 5-6 times a year...)

  • My parents say that tipping the mailman was customary in Hong Kong, especially if you're getting something large, or sent by registered mail. I'm not sure about today, but I wouldn't deal with anyone in Asia in general since Canada Post won't cover coins with registered mail.
