The duke of mint now has the highest rated set from the 60's outside of the 1968's. He must have picked up quite a few cards from Strapper. Nice job Carl!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
I thought for sure that the Duke picked up the Charlie Smith PSA 8 during the April 2003 Mastro Ebay sale. I am confident that he has had a PSA 8 of the card. Some time ago he told me that he sold his PSA 7 for approx $100. My guess is that he may of traded it away for a slew of PSA 9s for his set (or another set). Maybe he is hedging that another Smith PSA 8 will turn up in the next years or two. Since noone is close to catching him....he can afford to wait for another PSA 8 Smith to surface.
as someone who has known Carl for years i can tell you he is easily one of the nicest guys in the whole hobby and i am glad to see him kicking but with some of his sets in the registry. You dont meet many people with Carls money who are as nice cordial and down to earth as MR. Albero. Keep it up Duke!
Wayne and others-I thank you for your kind comments.Yes I did buy a slew of 9's from Strapper. He is a great guy and had to break up his set to pay hugh medical bills for his Mom.Has anyone noticed that PSA says 8.78 is the highest one could achieve in 65.Looks like they need to up date their data base. What I did with C Smith is a trade secret-I used the 8 to fund the purchase of some 9's and raise my registry grade as Smith only has a weight of 1.0-I believe PSA should weight a card like Smith higher then 1.0.If you have not noticed Strapper has some nice 9's listed on e-bay.-Duke
Duke, Since Smith is a "certified rarity" and should stay that way, I suspect that Joe would consider raising the point value of the card. I have written to BJ in the past with proposals, which she ran by Joe, and were accepted and then changed within the sets. I'd suggest a thread to get some inputs and then summarize in a mail to BJ. That should provide ample background and you can get it adjusted to a proper amount. This does bring up the question "should scarce commons make it into the SMR and have a higher weight?" If one does have a case, Smith might be it. Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

Wayne,
I would say that your assessment was fairly accurate.
I have 4 PSA 9's in that set.I guess that I am a long way from #1
One card at a time.
I'll get there eventually.
Vic
How did you let that happen?

I know that I have butted heads with the duke on 63's and he is one tough cookie.
I just hope that he doesnt decide to start working on one of the sets that I am close to completing.
Check out my ebay auctions listed under seller ID: jeej
That is a wonderful set. And The Duke is a great guy. He is very passionate about his collecting, and is as humble as they come. Well done.
Well the gauntlet is thrown, and I will just have to keep plugging. My 8.83 is just lagging. Anyone with 9's or 10's in '61 out there that I need??
PS. With Carl in VA. Beach, and me in Richmond, at least both of these sets reside in The Old Dominion!
