Camera or scanner?

I find a scanner does much better than a camera, at least for coins.
What do you think?

Some people do pretty good with scanners, but a camera works best for me.

You cannot compare a scanner with a camera in terms of image quality-there is no comparison and a camera is much more versatile overall.

If you are asking is a scanner a little easier and quicker to use when you want a fast coin image, then I will probably say yes.image

I would like to have both at my disposal... 1 to really show the technical detail better (scanner) and one to show the luster, color, and minute details, the camera... I only have a scanner, it's great at showing a coin, and the hits on it... but when it comes to the real look, my scanner does diddly... plus, it doesn't have the field of focus to get a clear picture of little things, like doubling, RPMs, RPDs, etc. through the plastic of the slabs...

The right camera is far superior for coins, especially capturing the luster.

There is no contest -- even mid-level digital cameras annihilate scanners.

(Don't judge by the puny photos that some people attach to the CU message boards -- these photos are reduced considerably in size (quality) so they can be hosted here. A better comparison is to look at the quality pictures forum members host on their own server space. Scanners aren't even in the same league as the vastly superior quality and incredible detail you can achieve with a decent camera in a macro or supermacro setting.)
