Secured Shipping....my ass!

Won a card from eBay for my kid and added the $2.00 shipping as requested. I rec'd it today shipped coast to coast from CA to PA
in nothing but a standard white envelope w/ two .37 cent stamps on it. It arrived in sections today. Perhaps if it was hand stamped
instead of the pressing postmark machine or in a padded envelope there would be no damage. Granted I am very careful about how I wrap & package a card, be it a $2.00, $200 or a $2000 PSA slab. I place it in a large sleeve, wrap bubble wrap around it and cardboard to sandwich it before I place it in a padded envelope. Or I place the sleeved card in a smaller padded envelope and then the larger one. Knock on wood, no damaged cards ever were rec'd by anyone from here. Since Jan, this is the 3rd slab I've rec'd damaged...jay

At least he didn't put the stamps/address on the slab itself!

Seriously, sorry about your recent struggles Jay...

btw -- I passed on the Weaver we discussed on the phone. It sold privately.

I've rec'd many PSA's in the mail, and many arrived unharmed w/ minimal packaging, the 2 cards below sent by 2 different sources got a nice laugh from me, But I imagine they both were hand stamped as opposed to machine stamped. The kelloggs card was shipped from FLA from board member FAB4, the other from a friend, that took me awhile to figure out. And although these 2 cards were rec'd in great shape, i recommend a bit of common sense when shipping a card via the mail...jay

    Jay-

Those cards are great...you should register them complete with scans!

.....hey, where's that guy that was whipping slabs off his roof ???

MURCERFAN - Oddly enough, the 3 damaged cards that I rec'd recently, were all Hockey. I guess the sellers practice a few slap shots with them first.

THEBOBS - Too bad about the Buck Weaver, seemed like a great addition to your collection.

BASILONE - I would make a US Mail registry set if I have enough cards to register, so everyone on the boards, feel free to send me your slabbed cards, any will do Mantle, Clemente, Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb image ...jay
  • qualitycards....MY GOD!!! If someone sent me a card like that and it wasn't a common...I'd snap. Why not get a bubble envelope? Geez.

VC - I just shrugged my head when I heard the contents jingle w/o even opening it. I sent the scan to the seller, so he can be alerted to ship a wee bit better in the future. I chose not to pay the additional $1.50 extra for insurance, since the card itself was just $3.00 anyway. So I'd be paying $3.50 shipping & insurance to recieve a claim of $3.00 if the card was lost or damaged. The holder was in pieces and the card could be removed, so PSA wouldn't re-holder it for the $5 if I chose that route, plus there are scraches and dents on the card from slab cracking. So I'll just put it in a top loader and give it to the boy. Not that big a deal, just thought that many would enjoy seeing the scan. Believe me, I've had worse transactions!!!...jay
  • Please don’t tell me someone seriously slapped stamps on a psa card and shipped it w/o anything covering it. I could see shipping a raw card (assuming it’s in a toploader/penny sleeve and ideally w/cardboard around it) if you absolutely had to (or were a cheap miser) in a plain/non padded envelope, but a graded card? Wonders never cease. Knock on wood, I have yet to receive any graded cards damaged, but that may be b/c I tend to buy from the same dealers for the most part.
  • Sorry to hear about this Jay. It happened to me twice before. One was in a regular white envelope and the other was in a padded envelope. The white envelope was just cracked, not completely through the case. The padded envelope one looked like Arnold had dropped his weight set on it. For me, secure slabbed card shipping = BOX. In a padded envelope, there is a high degree of chance that the envelope will get bent....which spells BROKE in the slab world. The chance of a slab being broke is too high for me, even in a padded envelope. Since I have requested a box, I have had no problems.

Jay, I feel your pain more than you know. I received the same player, from the same seller, with a $3 shipping fee, packed the same way on Tuesday. Of course, the slab suffered the same result, but mine was $12.25 for the card alone.

I have followed up with the seller, he has refunded my $$ including shipping, and has asked many questions as to how to ship securely. He has even asked me to send the card back to him with my shipping technique so that he can see "how it's done". At least he is willing to learn and took care of the problem very quickly. I will leave him positive feedback as it seems to be his inexperience in shipping that caused the problem, and he took the right approach to fixing the mistake.

Jay - just as long as mine wasn't one of the 3 that arrived damaged . . .

I would have left the seller a negative feedback on that one. PSA slab and plain envelope is asking for danger. Maybe not as much so as screwdown and plain envelope (which turned a beautiful '70 Carew into a G/VG card by the time I got it), but trouble nonetheless.

BTW, add me to the list of people who think that Jay does a fantastic job of safe shipping.

    Jay,
Thanks for naming names. All too often we hear these stories without knowing who-dun-it. It's nice to see such evidence crystal (although cracked) clear in your post.

If someone is boneheaded enough to ship this way, they wholeheartly deserve the photo-op and details of the transaction exposed.

    Right on Jay!

RAINMAN - The 2 slabs w/ stamps on them were sent by friends as a goof. These were not cards I bought or knew that they were even sent. So I thought it was funny, and how can I complain when free cards are sent. The Clemens is his Topps rookie graded a PSA-8, and theres not even a scratch on it.

NICK - Nope! Your '72 Hockey PSA-9 arrived in great shape, and I'm glad we traded as the one I had at PSA at the time did indeed come back an 8. Thank You for the trade proposal.

G.U.H. - I alerted the seller w/ the scan, so he could learn for the future. If he contacts me on the proper way to ship, I'll give him a disertation, step by step.

34G & BUG - Just thought I'd share it w/ everyone, so they too can package items securely. If a card of value (not that $3.00 Bourque) gets damaged in transit, its a major headache for the buyer & the seller. If insurance is utilized, the seller has to file a claim and wait for the USPS to evaluate it and eventually send a payment. If no insurance is paid for, its up to the seller to do what he feels is right.

I did not ask, nor will I for the seller to do anything but be more careful in his packaging in the future. The card w/ shipping was $5.00, not enough to worry about, and I still have the card to put in a top loader to give to my kid. So he's still a better seller then someone who takes your money and doesn't ship anything...jay

  • I have been buying cards for well over 10 years and I can say unequovically that Jay is the best shipper in the business.I have bought only one card from Jay(53 Bowman Reese PSA 8),but I couldn't believe how secure and careful it was packaged.I just wanted to state an ATTABOY image

    Jay,

It is too bad everybody does not take the time and effort that you do when shipping.

    Thanks,
    Vic

    PS,

I have been working for the Post Office for over 25 years and that scan made me cringe.I wish that I could speak for all postal employees in apologizing for your troubles, but alas.image I guess that I will express regrets for myself as part of the postal community.

    Vic
Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

VIC! Thank You! It only took a few minutes to package it securely. It avoids both of us getting pissed off if the card was dlvd as damaged. And no need to apoligize for the Bourque shipping miscue, as I blame that on the seller not the post office...jay
