Maddux in Chicago

Is this a good trade? What effect will this have on his rookie cards? Will the cubbies have the best rotations in baseball?
What do you guys think?

It will have no effect if he pitches poorly and say starts the season at 1-5
But if he does well and is 5-0, then it will help the activity of his cards and then the demand will increase the value.
Signing w/ a new team seldom helps a cards value, the players performance is the determining factor...jay

They might have the best rotation in baseball now, but Houston and Boston are right there with them. Happy to see he went back to the Cubs, and not where he was rumoured to go...

  • maddux rcs will likely go up, esp. if he reaches 300k. you can't even touch his 2 most pop. rcs (donruss/tiffany) graded for < 125. a year ago the same cards could be had for 50-75. i love maddux; if only raffy went to the cubbies w/him.

  • Im just looking at it as a nice replacement for Shawn ("It wasnt my fault") Estes. As a lifelong Cubs fan, one cant get too excited too early and put the cart before the horse.

Wood still has to win more than 13 games to be considered a strong force.

The Dodgers rotation goes 6 deep - without counting their star rookie (Edwin Jackson): Hideo Nomo, Odalis Perez, Kazuhisa Ishii, Wilson Alvarez, Darren Dreifort, Jeff Weaver. I'd move Dreifort to the bullpen to replace Paul Quantrill as setup man - his pitching performances look to fit better that way (he usually dominates his first time through the lineup, then has 1 bad inning in the middle to late innings). Add in Paul Shuey, Guillermo Mota, and Eric Gagne and you're looking at the team that will lead the league in ERA.

Maddux is still a very good pitcher, although no longer elite. If used correctly, he will very much help the Cubs.

Regardless, getting his 300th in a Cubs uniform is poetic justice. Hopefully it will be in a day game at Wrigley.

  • I am a Braves fan, and hated to see Maddux go. Although he was not a strikeout pitcher. He had years that rivaled Sandy Koufax for absolute domination of the opposition. Especially considering he pitched in a lot more hitter friendly era.

He has always been a class act. Smoltz is now the only one left from that great rotation of the 90's.

Might see his cards jump considering he was in the cubs uniform when he was a rookie.
  • Did anyone watch Maddux pitch last year? I mean I can't believe how many guys are happy to see him in Chicago when last year he was TERRIBLE!!! The worst part is is the Cubs got sucked into signing him for 3 YEARS!!! His ERA was over 5.00 for a part of last year, he can't get out of the 6th inning anymore and with that quiztech system to be hitting every park this year his days are really numbered. Maddux WAS my favorite picther hands down for the past 10 years, but last year he wasn't the same Maddux of old.
Good luck Cubs, but I see him pitching out of the bullpen by July.

  • Hey 80's toy guy - Like I said earlier Maddux was great, but he just hasn't been the same pitcher the last few years. If he isn't exact in his control he can get hammered. If I am not mistaken he led all pitchers in hits allowed last year.

In strict financial terms the Braves probably made a good decision not to sign him for a long term deal.

I just heard on the radio that maddux has given up the most longballs in the last 3 years total for 3 years!!! could be really bad than if the wind is blowing out!!!
Heard that on the radio so dont quote me!

Maddux was signed for 2 years with a team option for the third year. And yes, he started off horrible last year, but came in solid thereafter. Regardless, he is in the same boat as Clemens. Both are HOF pitchers who are in the twilight of their careers and have good info to pass on to younger pitchers.

As a Cubs fan, I would have liked the Cubs to get Pudge.

  • I agree with my icon brother Megatron. Pudge would have looked very nice behind the plate and could have turned a very good off season (to date) to a fantastic one.

But the Cubs have done well in the off-season, replaced their No. 5 pitcher with Greg Maddux, obtained a 100-RBI gold glove first baseman, a solid second baseman/center fielder in Miller and a key bullpen set-up/stopper. However, they still need a left-handed starter, a quality shortstop, need to hope that Corey Patterson's knee holds up and need a catcher who can hit above .230.

And regardless of how they look on paper, they still have to go out there and win.

I still believe there will be more moves made, but do feel that, if there are no more, they have improved from last year.
