Does anyone not regret giving up on a set?

1971 Topps trios in PSA 8..... I own 8 psa 8's...
I love this set. It is so hard to build in psa 8 and above because the bidding can get quite competitive on eBay... and it's relatively scarce in these grades.
While I do love a challenge... it's been over a year since I have added another psa 8 to my collection.
I get blown out of the water whenever I bid. Just can't afford to compete with some of the big dogs.
Psa 7's just don't cut it for me here.

So, I am thinking of giving it up and refocusing my funds on something new.
but... parting with the 8's I do have is tough.

I could keep what I have and wait and see what happens with supply and demand... or sell them for good money now.

Has anyone ever been here before and if so, what did you do?

Does anyone not regret giving up on a set?

Does anyone have a stack of 8's to sell me that could rejuvenate my interest? :-)

Are their any psychic friends out there that would advise me to keep them or sell now?

lol...
thanks,
Geoff

  • Geoff,
I'm in the same boat with my 1961 Hawks Essex Meats set. Finding these cards in any grade is a chore and especially PSA 8's. I'm halfway there but everytime a raw set comes on Ebay, it ususally looks pretty beat up and still seems to sell for outrageous prices. The last complete set had a mix of NM and VG cards, all raw, but still sold for well over $100.00 I've been debating giving up on the set to concentrate on my Red Mans for a long time.

I started a few Bowman sets that didn't get all that far. I was about 40 PSA 8 cards into the 1950 set. I don't regret it. I don't have time to linger on shoulda, coulda and woulda.
  • Vargha, I don't suppose you still have though 1950s? image

As far as regretting selling scarce sets, I kinda regret selling my #1 73T '53 Reprints Test set. I had the only one completed at 100% for a while (there have since been 3-4 more added) but the guy I sold it to still retains the #1 spot after adding a few more at higher grades. On the other hand, the sale gave me a decent profit and helped in getting more for the down payment on my first home!
  • I don't regret selling my '69 baseball set.

It was the last year I collected and one of the first two years I completed in the early 90's. The design never really appealed to me and no team cards made it a strange set, not to mention all those Pilots & Expos cards. Of those collectors I know pursuing a graded '69 set, apparently the centering and tilt problems can be disconcerting, to say the least.

Plus, the sale helped fund my endeavors to earlier years which have turned out to be more rewarding and valuable to me.

A divide and conquer strategy can work very well. Decide what you really like, sell off the losers and upgrade the winners.

Geoff, pick a price that you would be MORE than happy with and SELL, SELL, SELL! I had a 1972 Hockey set at 83% with a GPA at 8.5+, when I tried to finish it up the commons (when available) were going crazy, $35+ for 9s. I decided to break mine up and take some huge profits from it. The four 10s that I had went for BINs of $149! The prices have now come down about 50%, the submissions have increased, and if I decide to replace them it can be done much cheaper. It was an easier decision for me as 95% of the cards were from my own submissions and I was only into each card for about $7-$8. Good Luck, STEVE.
  • Thanks for all of the insight.
I had the auctions all ready to go and delayed them another week.
(Well worth the .10 ebay fee)
They are just such cool cards... I think I'll stare at them another week and try to see what parting with them feels like.

  • Geoff,

Have you tried out eBay's Turbo Lister? Its a piece of software where you make the listings and save them on your computer. I usually make auctions during my down times then when a FLD comes up or the market gets real high, a few clicks puts up all my auctions. No fees for waiting.
