Return PSA flips or not???

Everybody always complains that the population report isn't accurate because we don't send the busted out flips back to PSA. Idea, what if PSA started charging a deposit on these flips like some states do for cans? Say we pay an additional .50 when grading and then when we return a flip we would receive .50 back no matter if we were the original submitter or not. A benefit for us would be an accurate population report and a benefit for PSA is that extra .50 might be enough of an incentive to crack out the $5 high-end 8 and and try for a $30 psa 9. What are your thoughts?

Since I submit a small amount of cards per year (<500), 50 cents per card wouldn't affect me much.

I'd think that the heavy submitters would gripe a little though...

    Three comments:

    A) Given that it is 13 years later, I think a large number of flips have already been destroyed.

    B) Reports by others of returning flips that do not get implemented/updated into the PSA Population Report reduces incentive to return flips.

    C) Large submitters who buy big $$$ 9s and crack in the hopes of getting a PSA 10 certainly do not want to be outted for what they do....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    rediculous idea.
protecting your investment should be enough reward.
just send the damn things back already.

    I agree with Murcerfan.

Maybe PSA could give us a .50 credit for every flip returned.image
Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

Has anyone actually ever sent back a flip with a serial number on it? Would PSA even WANT them washing up on their shores? Even if there were no financial incentive, would they correct the pop report if they were to get back the flips? Anyone?

I've sent back piles. most of the time i even see them come off the pop report...eventually.
joe encourages it and conveyed that message at the national luncheon.
they are not foolish enough to think that everyone always agrees with the grades on holders.
it is in everyone's best interest to have an accurate population report, that's why it was strated to begin with.

When I see flips lying around at shows from dealer crackouts, I pick them up and eventually deliver them to PSA. I doubt it matters much for them to learn that a '92 Bowman Piazza in PSA 8 or a '86 M. Jordan sticker in PSA 8(ST) has been broken out, but I still like to see accuracy.

PSA should set up an annoynomous drop box at shows.
  • Murcerfan, ridiculous??? Maybe too late but I don't think ridiculous. I never said I didn't send mine back. I was only trying to think of a way to encourage people to keep the population report accurate. I don't think drop boxes at shows PSA sets up at is the answer as there are many PSA collectors that never attend these shows. I was only trying to stimulate the board to brainstorm for a good solution if feasible. I figure this would help protect the investments of fellow board members who entertain us with bidding wars on low pop commons. This might help the scenario of 6 months down the road the pop report is skewed because someone has resubmitted an 8 several times.

They can expect to get a small stack from me at the Ft. Washington show in 2 weeks. I could care less if they know I crack their holders.
In fact, it's good for them to see how often people feel they're inconsistent. I doubt they care either...they get paid twice.

That said, I still think they're the best out there.

Maybe not! - If the slab is cracked for resubmitting, it may go to another grading service as well.
And vice-versa w/ all the other companies POP's too when an xyz slabbed card becomes a PSA..jay
