morgans, pls v. dmpls

lavalava Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭
I was sorting through my prooflikes to decide which are worthy for submission for upgrade to dmpl, and when I finished going through all of my coins, I was surprised by the number of coins I thought might upgrade, which got me thinking that maybe I'm missing something.

Is there a clear bright-line test for assigning a pl versus a dmpl designation. If not, can you offer some guidance as to how collectors might help distinguish between dmpls and pls.

On a related note, I keep hearing PCGS is getting tougher on its dmpls. Any truth in that?

As always, any help is very much appreciated.
I brake for ear bars.

For raw coins, you should hold your finger about 6 inches from the coin. If you can see the reflection clearly, it's probably a DMPL. It's a little tougher when they are already in a holder, but check out the reflection.

I don't think PCGS is any tougher on DM than it had been for the past few years. I certainly haven't heard anything in the grading room about it.

    Thanks,
