Small Story about Sac Dollars

Hello,

What is going on with the Sac dollar? My girlfriends son got a Sac dollar coin folder from Santaimage. I figured the Sac dollar folder would be the first to be filled since it's only 9 coins ( 2000P/D - 2004P/D and 1 Reverse). I went to the bank to get a roll of Sac dollars and they said "We dont have any rolls right now". So I asked "How many singles do you have?" The lady ran around to each teller asking and looking in their drawers( not pants) then come back to me and said "Well, we don't have any at this time but we have some Susan B Anthonys" image So I got 2 of those one for each kid.

This was a few weeks ago and I go to the bank to deposit my check every week and it's the same ole answer. So an idea popped into my head today. I needed some stamps so I said to myself. SELF! you can get some stamps and the Sac Dollars would drop as your change image. I hopped in the car and get to the post office and throw a 20.00 in the machine and out pops my stamps, 1 Susan B and alot of Sac Dollars. I throw them in my pocket and head home. I get out the Sac folder and and the coins from my pocket and start going through them. OK, this is where it gets to me. I looked at each one and they looked like they been Flushed down a toilet ran through the treament plant , found, then accidently dropped on a highway , ran over a few times , then found by the post office where they deposited them into the change section of the stamp machine. If they can't be gotten from a bank why the hell are they looking like this?
100% Frustrating so, I crack a image , watch the fuse channel (alternative rock, heavy metal make ya ears bleed kind of music ......it makes my day better) and then come on here and ask why.

What dates did you find? There's a belief around here that only Sac Dollars dated 2000 can be found in circulation (I'm won't dispute this).

I believe for the last few years they only came in mint/proof sets.

Most were 2000-P...... but I got 1 2001-P that was in ok shape. Still had a little bit of luster to it. Most were very very dull and grey looking....very little shine.

[Edit] I got the coin out and looked it again to give you more detail.
Obverse: It's got some marks on it, some light ones. One on the cheeck that is small and one on the cloth just under the childs head. It has 2 rim dings. These are very small.
Reverse: has 4 marks on it ......all of them in the feild one above and below E pluribus....small one under the beak...and a small one under the star thats under E in States.
Most look like an edge of a coin hit it directly .......could be considered bag marks? Probably where they fell from the Stamp machine as they were deposited as change.

    CaptainRon,

Although I don't collect Sac Dollars, I do make a note of their dates whenever one finds its way to me. And until the discussion concerning the difficulty in locating later dates, I hadn't noticed that I too had never seen any other dates.

I got a 2001 at the PO once, probably in 2001. Didn't give it no thought at the time. Ain't seen one in circulation since.

I ask at the local supermarket all the time, and I watch out for them elsewhere, especially at the Post Office. All I ever see are 2000s.

Get on Ebay, buy what ya need, and that will be the end of it.

2002p+d and 2003p+d are not in circulation, only sold. They are available on Ebay.

Is there a confirmed positive that there will not be any 2004's?

The U.S. mint does like to trick us, at times.

My local bank still offers rolls and I pick them up for use in the store I manage. I can blash through a few rolls a week if I choose to. In all this time I have never got anything but a 2000 dated coin, never a '01. The '02 and '03's can be only found in the mint sets.

Lightside, I have confirmed that there will be 2004 P&D Sacagaweas. I spoke with the Mint the other day. Check out the link I posted above to see my report on that conversation.

BTW, they are available Feb 18th, 2004.

I occasionally get a roll to spend. The last roll I got had a 2001-P in it. It was the first one I've seen in circulation. It had turned that unattractive brownish color so I quickly spent it.

The banks here in Colorado Springs seen to have rolls of them available.

I haven't seen a shiny UNC one from a bank in quite awhile.

I have gotten one or two 2001-P coins at the post office. I still get more Susies than I do '01 Sackies, though.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Only the 2000 P, D and 2001 P, D were released into circulation. 2002, 2003 and 2004 are only available by purchase (bags, rolls and mint and proof sets.) Some of the 2002-2004 coins may be placed into circulation as I have found to date one Sac dated 2002(D). image

I have seen 2000-PD's in Seattle and 2001-P's in circulation in Massachusetts.

The poor quality of the coins is due to the metal composition.. They are basically brass, and brass tarnishes ugly.. why this didn't occur to the designers of mint's precious "golden" dollar I don't know. My understanding is that the mint is required by law to mint Sac dollars... until such time as a law specifying a new design or a halt to minting is passed.. so we will see these useless clumps of metal in 2004, 05, 06 and so on until somebody comes to their senses in Washington.. and I thought it couldn't get any worse than the Susan B. Still it's a US minted coin so one of these days I'll get around to completing my set of them...

SAC's look bad because if they are touched one single time they tarnish in about 1 day. They are very unforgiving in that respect.

My bank never has them either. Will try the post office.

You will find some 2002's (and maybe even some 2003's) in circulation because back in 2002 when the mint announced that they would be sold to collectors only I read reports from collectors reporting on what kind of quality they had found in their rolls, and a lot of them ended by saying that after they had picked out the ones they wanted that they spent the rest of them. I don't recall reading anything like that last year but it may have still happened.

I had a similar experience the other day, got some from the PO machine buying a book of stamps.
Only kept a couple of the Sacs and the SBAs because most of them looked really crappy. Real tarnished, like they had been out in circulation for 10-15 years. So far, besides the post office, I haven't seen them anywhere. Managed to get one roll and one roll of Kennedy halves at the bank the other day, that was all I could get. I usually just give to my two teenagers when they want money to spend. Must be the metal that was used, not a great choice. Made them look real old real fast. Haven't been able to find anything but the 2000 dates either. Sure aren't circulating much, that's for sure.
