To me, it looks like uneven tone around the date-nothing else. It doesn't look like an error.

Looks OK to me. Maybe some slight strike doubling, and the toning pattern gives an optical illusion of a "shift" effect that isn't really there.
    When in doubt, don't.

Looks like what they call "Pull-Away" Toning where the toning does not extend all the way up to the date or other raised feature on the coin.

I will take a guess that perhaps since there was metal flow around the date, the toning may have selectively formed in sreas where there was less disturbed metal flow, and did not form in the higher flow stres areas due to a different texture of the metal there ...

If JBSteven says that it looks natural, that's good enough for me -- he's a market maker in toned Morgans ...

I'm not 100% sure from the photo if the coin is Mint State or AU - hard to tell from the photo... there may be some rub on Miss Libery's cheek...

The toning is from an album. It most likely is a variety, is this a Philadelphia or New Orleans issue?
  • What more ideas do you need? It's toning. That's what it looks like when the chemical that the silver reacts with comes from a specific direction.

Whereever the coin was kept, the chemical was coming up and going outward toward the rim. Parts of the area under the date is just "toning shadow".

I have several coins that look like that.

Not an error and not unusual.
