1891 CC $5 Gold MS 63...any idea of value?

Blanchard has it at $3499
PCGS has it at $3525
Teletrade just auctioned one in Jan for $2200

Any other ideas?

The CDN Quarterly price is listed at $2300. The three most recent Heritage auction prices realized were $2127 (ICG) January 04, $2300 (NGC) May 03 and $2328 (NGC) January 03.

well, there you go, the Blanchard and PCGS quotes are ask or selling prices by those companies, and the bid price, or wholesale price on the coin is about a thousand dollars less.

  • WOW! a $1000 spread? Doesnt seem the local dealer works on that type of spread.

Yup, generally speaking, coin sales companies that have to pay the salaries of salesmen charge a larger markup than smaller firms that run on a thinner margin.

Then again, you usually have to buy in quantities to get the best wholesale price, so for us collectors it's usually best to try to split the difference on average, most of the time paying between wholesale and "full retail"

It would be interesting to see a photo of the blanchard and Heritage sale coin together.

Blanchard spends a lot of money on brochures, salesmen and sales women, staff, advertising, litigation.........
