To qualify as a mint state coin, does the ......

coin have to be completely free of rim nicks.

In my case, referring to a 1932 S Washington quarter.. What is allowable ? The coin has no wear, only a few rim nicks. Will it still make the grade?

Thanks for your opinions...

Randy

how many, and how big are the nicks?

a couple small ones (very small) are allowed

many many (like 20 or more) small ones are not

a couple of big ones are not.

as long as luster is complete and intact then mint state

look at hair and breast feathers on reverse as well as rim

a few rim nicks will affect overall grade, but unless scratched or gouged, should not go below MS60 if luster is intact
  • Crazy,

This has always been a topic of debate amongst graders as it is not common practice to look at the sides of a coin to determine its grade, though it IS a part of the coin and in my opinion should be a factor when grading. Anything noticeable is obviously going to detract from its grade. If the rim nicks are big or clustered but there is still no wear on the coin, it may still be dropped to an AU grade. If you send it to PCGS, they may notice. A lesser service, however, may entirely overlook the rims and you may be able to "pass" the coin as an MS piece.

In my opinion, if the coin has no wear, it is mint state. Period.

If the rim nicks are heavy enough to warrent a lower grade, then the coin should be described as damaged and then net graded.

It the rim nicks on a strictly unc coin are so offensive that a major grading service is unwilling to call it unc, they will NOT net grade it. The coin will be bodybagged.

  • But just because it gets body bagged that doesn't mean that it isn't Mint State.
  • Sorry, double post.
