Jester's Challenge #212

Welcome to Jester's Challenge, an interactive history lesson.

Inspired by many others here on the Darkside forum, I'd like to present what I hope will turn into a great learning experience for all of us. Many members on this World and Ancient Coin Forum have done a formidable job of sharing with us many fascinating and historically important coins. Since looking at coins is also one of my greatest pleasures, I'd like to try to follow in that time-honored tradition and submit for your pleasure and entertainment some world coins I've come across in my short lifetime.

I will pick out a coin on a regular basis, and post it along with the challenge to you to name the coin, its provenance, denomination, metallic content, mintage, any distinguishing characteristics or noteworthy features, and its value. The more information, the better. I'd like as many people as possible to participate, regardless of how little knowledge you might have on the subject. I appreciate comments on every aspect of the coin, including its history, or its role in human history, or info on similar coins in its series, etc. I myself don't presume to know 1/1000 of what you collectively know, hence my challenge to all of you to share your knowledge with the rest of us. Hopefully this exercise will encourage thought, discussion, and most importantly, more friendship.

Thanks for your participation!!!

Folks, I'm sorry, but I don't know what this token is. I suppose it is a coppr one penny token from Jamaica. However, I don't know anything about it, nor any of the references listed on it. My guess is that it is from the 18th Century sometime. I anxiously await any concrete information regarding this piece.

PS: I can see that the horse on the reverse is immense! And it's wearing an English saddle, which is altogether unsurprising, even expected. I don't know who M. Howard was, nor to what Ferry Grass refers. Perhaps it's the name of Howard's estate?

I just did some reading on the net, through a Gooooogle search, and apparantly horse racing was favored by some of the principle founders (of British origin, in the 17-19th centuries) of Jamaica, so it's quite possible the horse on the reverse is some reference to this. Also, I read about a buggy known as a tandem that the prominent people would ride in, and that's what may be depicted on the obverse. So far I haven't been able to find anything specific on either who Howard was, or what Ferry Grass is. Maybe it IS smokable??! imageimage

I know nothing about this interesting looking token.

Looks a lot like the mail coach conders of the 1790s. And the horse could be normal sized, the handler could be a boy. image I've seen contemporary prints (I'd guess 1825 at the latest) with livery boys decked out like that. Cool token. You don't see much from colonial Jamaica.
