What should I do with bags of old wheats? Grandma's hoard???

DMWJRDMWJR Posts: 6,005 ✭✭✭✭✭

For years I picked up wheat cents whenever I could, buying rolls and bags to look through for key dates, RPMs, Doubled Dies, etc.

Now I am ready to get rid of the "hoard" which is probably about 10,000 wheats.

Should I wholesale them to one of these penny brokers, or put them in small bags, make up a good story, and sell them on Ebay as Mrs. Haversham's lost hoard found in the attic of an old church????

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Doug,

Don't be slezzzbay seller.... I'd put them in lots of 1000 with a guarentee of a "date" to be found. Put a really nice one in there... so It's in one of the 10 bags..... even list the date and grade.... I think you'll do better....
  • Put together partial sets in old whitman books and sell them on e-bay that way as a "starter collection set" for kids

Peaceman, yes that was said tongue in cheek. Your idea sound like a very good idea though. I didn't think about putting one of the key dates in each bag and listing that in the auction.

You may not recall, but I used to be one of the biggest Mrs. Haversham bashers on the forum -- especially dead Harold's estate sale!!!!!!

  • lol.... Yea... I'd put just one coin that's worth "something" in one of the bags and in the description, I'd indicate that.... then in each of the other bags put a lessor "key" date... good luck.
  • I like the Whitman Folder idea, you could do that with some of them Wheaties you got... wouldn't be hard to fill in at least all the 40s and 50s, even some of the 30s and include one or 2 from the teens and twenties... great way for kids to get in on coin collecting!

If you are a YN, I'll gladly send you some. I would prefer to see them go to a good home. PM me your name and address, and the dates you need. I've got a stack of practically every date except the 14/d, SVDB, 22 plain.

I'd spend a few. Spread them around to other potential collectors.

  • Oh, I just got a GREAT idea! Fill in as many Whitman Folders as you can, as starter sets. And give them to a local Cub Scout Pack! image I know that one of the elective pins for the Webelos is Coin Collecting, and there's a coin collecting Merit badge for the Boy Scouts, but it would be a great way to get some young kids interested in Coin Collecting. But, like you could call up a pack leader, and offer to come in one night and talk about coins. And bring a couple of the folders along and some other low dollar coins, and have a little drawing with the kids to give out the stuff. I think that'd be an awesome thing for you to do! image

Don't waste time or effort on that type of material. Find a buyer for the whole lot and get rid of them. Put the money raised to good use ASAP.

I think you should put them into circulation.Let others find them and start collecting them.

How do you enjoy your day off with a bag of wheat cents. Two words: train tracks.

  • Is the potential profit on Ebay worth the time/effort to package them, set up auctions, ship them, etc???

You might be better off just recovering face value by depositing them at your bank.

  • I have a lot of old wheats I want to get rid of too. Around 15-20 thousand. I'll probably just put them on Ebay as a lot at .01 start and let them go to the high bidder.
Most times bag quantities will go for 3 times face. That's real fair.
When I first started collecting in the mid 1950's, indian head cents were selling for 3 cents each........when a dealer was lucky enough to find someone that'd buy them. They had been replaced about 40 years earlier by the Lincoln cent. Now you can get a buck a piece for commons in good.
Now we have a similar situation with wheat cents being gone about 40 years, and selling for about 3 cents. Will they sell for a buck apiece in another 40 years? If so, someones gonna make a killing.

  • Get them to some YN's, or sell them in bulk for what they are.

I wouldn't suggest the "hide a key date in one of the 10 bags" idea, as you
could be setting yourself up for someone negging you, claiming that you are
a ripoff when their bag doesn't include said key coin!

There are several tens of millions of indians in the world. There are many hundreds
of millions of wheat cents. Attrition may be fairly high but it will still take many decades
to get the numbers down to where the indians are now. The price right now is about
as high as it's been. If you want to sell it's an excellent time.
