10,000 card PSA submission: Can it be done?

Guys:

I have been fortunate to "meet" a long time collector while breaking up my 1969 set whom many of us have bid against, Dave Cryer (vmfa_vet). Dave's 1964 set is currently a very impressive #2 on the registry, but hardly begins to scratch the surface of his vast Topps collection. Dave has at least one of every card from 1952 (plus 51 Redbacks) through 1962, and 1970 to ... Most of Dave's collection still needs to be graded. While the cost to grade these sets, even on a special, is significant, the paper work would be a nightmare. I know of very few collectors, and probably only a few dealers, that have looked to get 5,000 or 10,000 cards graded at once. Any suggestions?????
Dave

    Hi Dave..Long time no see...

Call Joe Orlando. .........PH: (800) 325-1121.

I'm sure he will want to talk about the large submission you spoke of.

(See if you can get any "Beer Credits".....LOL...)

  • Glad I got my small (50 and 75 card) submissions in already before PSA gets bogged down with this one! image

  • I agree with The King. Joe is the only person to get suggestions from on this one. Plus, he's the only place to get the huge discount you'll get.

Yes, talk to Joe. He should be able to get a better than standard rate for a submission of that size. I also would consider breaking it up into smaller submissions. If the 'grader of death' is still there, he wouldn't want to have all 10,000 cards pass through that dark, dreary room. I haven't run into G.O.D. recently, so maybe he's no longer there. But it might not be a bad idea for Dave to hedge his bets.

Have you seen his collection? How do you think he'll fare? I've seen him go heavy on high grade auctions on eBay, so if his raw collection is anything like the graded cards he buys it should be an incredible submission.

In my experience PSA will want each invoice to contain 300-400 cards per invoice. That way it can be shipped easier. Not to mention that they have a break point. I know that PSA does not mind that you place a sticker on the back of the card when doing a bulk deal. That is a big time saver.
You do need to call Joe so he can go over some things with you.

Hey Dave. Just took a look at Shanes' post and that's sound advice.

I always break my larger submissions down to 250 cards per invoice. If you look at the back of a PSA invoice, you'll see the breakdown for value/shipping. Line 5 (250 cards) seems to be the best deal (at least for me). I sent in a 3000 card order, a while back, and PSA broke it down to 250 card anyway (and changed all my invoice #'s...) It was a little confusing on my end, but worked out perfectly in the end...Now all my orders are the same routine...

    Something to ponder...

  • Thanks guys, I'll pass this thread on to Dave. He just submitted the 52 set (including a whopping 4 Mantles, drool, sloppy drool) in a 300 card lot. Hopefully, he can work something out with Joe.

John: Dave says a lot of care has been taken with his sets, so it should be pretty neat to see how they fare.

Larry: Are you still working on that 72 set? You spend way too much time working on those plastic covered cards!

  • I used to use the online submission form, save it to my computer, and then "submit" online more sheets, and then just edit the saved one to the correct invoice number..... then you can TYPE the entries instead of handwriting all of them.

that was when i was submitting about 2500 a month
  • Wlf3: Were you using Excel? I noticed this week that I could take the pop reports and copy them right into an Excel spreadsheet and manipulate them however I needed. Makes things a little easier. Thanks.

Last year I shipped in about 2000 cards through a dealer and his recommendation was to break it up into 400 card invoices. His thought was that 400 was probably about the limit before the grader would start to get a little testy and bored.

So - even though he would still be grading the same number of cards - at each 400 mark - he got to check off the COMPLETED box on the invoice and got to move on to the next one.
