TONED COINS?

What type of toned coins do people pay the most for? Dark toned ones? light toned ones? How do you know a good one? Is it better to buy them slabbed? I saw two slabbed PCGS beauties tonight at the show. But I don't know much about them.

  • The beauty of toned coins is that different things call to different people. Rainbows, pastels, endroll, textiles, album, each coin can be unique. Learning what to look for and how to tell real from AT is the big challenge. But it can be done and in many cases you can collect multiples of the same coin in a whole array of different colors and patterns. Unless you are very adept at telling what toning looks like and what is appealing, I would stay away from raw toned coins until you fine tune your skills.
  • So stay with the slabbed ones for now?

As a rule, toning in the red and greens seem most favored, followed by orange, gold, purple , violet

then Indigo and blue. It is a matter of preference, but most collectors seem to like the warmer colors

    over the cooler colors.

It's a relative measure. After all, when it comes to toning it becomes a matter more of personal aesthetics than anything else. But generally the more amazing the coin looks the more amazing the price. And that is a necessarily vague definition. The amazing coins are more about experiences than definable criteria. Thankfully, amazing coins can be found even by ordinary collectors (like myself) or ordinary means (like myself) who keep their eyes open.

Another thought. The ANA has a video on toning, detecting artificial and natural toning. It's not going to make you an expert but it will help you recognize what to look for. Well worth the price. It has helped me a lot.
  • I thoroughly agree with Neil (nwcs). The toning video is a must to understand toning.

I think colored toning will bring the most money but it must be original or as the case seems to be these days- it must be pretty close to what original colors are supposed to look like. mike
