Why would anyone ever want to remove a coin from a slab? Slabbed coins have been professionally graded and certified so you can rest assured that the grade on the slab is THE correct grade and no one can argue with that!

Embarrassingly, I've found a poor way to do it. Last time I tried to open an NGC slab I fingerprinted the coin trying to break the plastic away, so I figured I'd shatter the entire slab with a BB gun. Sighting the slab at about 6-7 feet through a scope, I let her fly with about 7-8 pumps. It worked beautifully - the entire back of the slab blew off and the coin was easily removed. Then I realized at such a short range the scope sighted significantly higher than the barrel actually aimed. The results:

I suggest placing the slab in Hydrochloric or Sulfuric acid overnight.... Wake up the next morning and Presto!! The slab is gone and your coin has been dipped automatically. One drawback--you lose the insert tag and thus no chance of getting the astronomical sum of $0.50 for it.

Unless it seeps inside the slab where the two halves are not properly sealed and damages the coin, the material from which most slabs are made will not be much affected by prolonged contact with either hydrochloic or sulfuric acids.
