I would never buy a raw 16 SLQ. , or any other key date that is not PCGS/NGC/ANACS certified.

No way. A coin like that raw, on eBay? Not a chance. Could be counterfeit. I don't buy raw on eBay. The question to be answered is:
Why isn't a key coin like that in a holder?

    Cheers,

    Bob
  • I would never bid on it.

I think the only way to absolutely verify the authenticity of a 16 SLQ is to buy it and mail it immediately to that guy who advertises in Coinworld who describes himself as the SLQ guy and who wears the same hat that Goldfinger did in the Bond movie of the same name.

I might bid 25 cents. But in case the quarter aint a real one, I would

    lose my 25 cents equity.

  • On EBAY, even if the seller knows about grades you are usually on your own with a few rare exceptions.

  • I believe it is a cast copy ....... then polished and toned down slightly......... I believe you can see the edge seam in the obverse photo between 3 and 6 o'clock.............

    Methinks tis dubious

The amazing this is, I think it is a real 1916 quarter. It seems to have been pollished at some time. Still, I don't buy from people with a low feedback. It is too big a risk they will take you money and run. Ebay can't stop someone from using good pictures of a real coin to set up a fake auction.

Wait, I see the seam on the right side. It could be a cast copy of the real coin. It is not an altered 1917. The coin has the die characteristics of a 1916.

The seller had one previous sale on ebay - a raw 1916-D Merc.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
