How do you price XF45 draped bust coins??

I was just wondering how everyone goes about valuing these coins. Lets take a half dollar for instance that is graded XF 45 and has some luster and color and is overall very nice for the grade. The sheets say $800 in XF and $1800 in AU. DOes this get priced at $1300 the average of the two grades??

Are you buying or selling? image

Seriously, some sort of interpolation is accepted by some. I will sometimes split the spread.

  • John,

I'm not buying or selling, but wondering?? I supose if you are buying then the dealer wants the split price, but if you are selling, it is just an XF. I see a few Xf45's from time to time, that really have more going for them than Au50's, and was just curious how much more value people will place on them over the xf40?

In my experience, if the coin *looks* to be uncleaned and has attractive surfaces, it's going to go for a premium over that median number you quoted.

    Jay,

I knew that you were weren't selling or buying. My point was what you intimated in your reply. A dealer will want to sell at an interpolated rate and buy just at XF money.

I have sold to dealers at an interpolated price too however. It all depends on the originality/quality of the coin.

I just bought three draped bust coins yesterday.

The 1798 dollar will go for grey bid as it is original decent coin.
The 1807 Half has a shot at AU and is primo, so even if it doesnt grade AU, I will want nearly AU money for it.
The 1806 quarter is cleaned and retoned, not original so I will sell it for under sheet.

Three coins and three different references wrt sheet.

    Vr.,
