Question on 1970 Uncirculated mint sets

Hi All.

One of my E-bay customers asked me the following question. Would someone be so kind to provide us with the answer?

Thank you.

Larry

Larry...Have a question for you. On the 1970 Uncirculated mint sets with the 70-D Kennedy were these sets envelopes not sealed by the mint? I have been told by some sellers on e-bay that they were not originally sealed. Thanks for your help! Robert

  • I've heard both versions....sealed and not sealed......Ken
  • And now a middle of the road answear. Poorly sealed as it would not be hard to open and reseal or put into after market envelopes.

I have never seen a mint set pulled from original shipping packaging that was mint sealed. Neither has any dealer I've asked about it. I believe that mint sets were NOT sealed at the mint.

With proof sets, it's been about 50/50, and those that were mint sealed it was only the center third of the flap. So, if you buy a "mint sealed" proof set and the entire gum area has been licked and closed, it was likely sealed post mint.

  • My mint set envelopes of that era were definitely not sealed.
