How rare is a 1934 - D VAM 4 Peace Dollar

Over at http://www.vamlink.com/Peace$%20Top%2050.htm , it`s described as ultra rare. I was wondering if anyone here could tell me anymore about how unusual it is to find one? How many are known? How likely is it to find one?

  • ccr. the only info I could find reads, "This variety is fairly scarse but still readily collectable." No mention of how mant etc. Bob
    Pecunia in arbotis non crescit.
  • It's rare and up there with some others that are hard to get. The VAM book puts it as one of the most desirable. NGC has salabbed 8.... but then you go to something like the 22 VAm 1A which is fairly easy to find, they've only slabbed 3..... ?

David Close has a complete list of VAM's which go into the hundreds. As far as the top 50.... it's a hard coin to find. As far as rareness, there's are many more coming to light that are far more rare....
  • The Doubled obverse can be seen with the naked eye. Because they are so easily detected, I've seen a few dozen during shows the past few years. ALL have been the more common VAM-3 with the medium/large mint mark that is a filled/bobby D. I've never cherried a VAM-4 micro D.

    ANACS pop report from Sep 2003 has 334 VAM-3s and 39 VAM-4s, a 10 to 1 ratio

Word of caution on the VAM population reports: When people find a VAM-4 it is MUCH more likely to be slabbed than the VAM-3. This is true of most VAMs. A higher percentage of the tough ones wind up slabbed as they sell easier and at a higher premium. My guess is that Micro Ds are about 50 to 1 on a reasonably tough DDO to begin with.

I've seen some high premiums paid to own one. They are seldom offered for sale.

I've 'picked 6 to 8 over the last 15 years. Rare, but not as tough as claimed.
  • Cool! Let me know the next time you get one. I'm always interested.
