I like to look a great cards I found some nice PSA 10's 75 Brett 80 Henderson

They seem to be very solids 10's. I dont know the seller but I ran across the cards and thought some of the collectors here but be intrested in the cards. The prices are high but so is the quality.

  • Great find but Brett looks off center to me. Looks like an 8 with those edges. The Rose looks a little off side to side as well, but sweet.

The Henderson and Mays are sweet. So is the '74 Ryan but it may be a bit off top to bottom.

The Wizard and '79 Ryan cards seem a bit off to me as well. Don't they look a bit tilted to anyone else?

  • I disagree they dont look titlted and 99% of all cards are off center. Less the 1% are 50/50 all the way around. And ops's are going to have that rough edge especialy the left edge. The edge is considered fine if the eye appeal is still there. My point is they look great.

Someone who has seen this 540 in person told me it's an OK 10.All in all it's not a bad 10 but not a great one by collector's centering preferences

The Rose that 4 sharp corners sold was a good looking slamming card.I believe the sentering was much better than this one.I think the Rose is still visible in his feedback.

There have been a minimal of 80T 10s that have had a minor tilt or not so perfect centering closer to 55/45 than closer to 50/50.Despite the not so perfect centering in those cases,I'll bet the surface is one of the cleanest and the corners are razor sharp.Usually on 10s that look like this everything else about them is solid and they gave a pass on the centering even a minor tilt, but very minor.

Believe it or not, this year is difficult to find nicely centered.

James,I just noticed the Henderson,I have to go look at it and dream.image

    James,

I'm trying to pick yet another fight with you. I agree with your points above. Isn't that why the percentages of 10's is well under 1%?

I guess my point is if I'm spend that kind of money I want perfection, not just a 10 holder. But that's one mans opinion. They're nice none-the-less.

The Hendy looks great! For centering,it doesn't get much better than that.
  • The seller, Bob Earhart, is widely known to have the finest collection of PSA 10's in the hobby. He would purchase ONLY PSA 10's as far back as 5-7 years ago. He is a great collector with a flawless reputation in the hobby.
  • I too am not blown away by the Brett, but the rest are awfully nice cards. With regard to the two '79 Topps cards, I can see the slight diamond cut but can also see how great the all around centering is. I haven't seen thousands of '79 Topps cards like some folks here undoubtedly have, but it sure seems to me from Trammell card hunting and browsing other stars '79 Topps issues that the set is unusually prone to an upward tilt left to right (although Tom Seaver comes to mind as a possible exception to this, and there certainly may be others). For the Trammell this is definitely a major problem; the only two copies I've seen that looked straight on the bottom were inside BGS 9.5 holders, and my 9 is certainly noticeably worse than either the Ryan or the Smith.

The debate of allowing imperfections in your highest grade vs. not, and/or whether a truly perfect card actually exists not is kind of curious. Certainly population stats suggest that there's a lot more room for error in a PSA 10 than there is in a BGS 10 or an SGC 100 (Here's a fun question: what's the oldest SGC 100 card anyone's ever seen?). And standards for a 10 allow room for variation within the grade on how copies of the same card may look and earn the grade. Ultimately, I find the PSA 10 standard to be a good balance of sanity and eye-appeal.

  • I recently opend four wax boxes of 1980 Topps. I sure wish I had a star in that condition. I did get a PSA 9 Ryan. I have about 20 other s cards from those boxes at PSA currently with hopes of 10's. The best Henderson is PSA 7 quality.

Those cards are tough indeed to find "perfect".

  • Hey guys,

What about the prices on these cards? Is that really a reasonable price on the '74 Ryan? I have a complete '74 set with an average of 8.26 and that 1 card would represent 2/3 of the money I have in the entire set! Does this seller negotiate? I would love to have that card, but the price is just not reasonable to me. (or my wife who would promptly kick my butt)

    Your thoughts?

  • The card that interests me the most is the 1979 OPC Ozzie Smith Rookie- the "Holy Grail" of Ozzie cards. I was wondering who owned this one of a kind card! The card jumps out as a solid 9+ but in my eyes does not appear "perfect".

I started about 8 weeks ago collecting the 1979 opc set in psa 9. For some odd reason I am attracted to the design... likely because 1979 was about the time I was flipping ansd scaling the most cards when I was a youngster.

The rough cuts on OPC cards make collecting these cards extremely difficult in high grade and I enjoyed the opportunity to view this card. The price - OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Nice thread!
  • sideplate and RG58,

Those prices are exactly why I was critical of the cards. They better be flawless at those rates. Well...at least for me.

I am currently putting together 1979 and 1980 sets for the registry...but no way would I pay $15K for a 10 Henderson! And, who really would? I have a pair of flawless 9's (and a third card at PSA now, who knows?). The 9's are around $200 a piece, and while I can appreciate the difference between a 9 and a 10 in 1980 (as Rob knows!), I can't justify the gigantic price difference here.

Maybe Rickey himself would? I agree it's sick but people do it.

    Ken,

To answer your question, no, Bob will not negotiate. He has several PSA 10s that I would like to get from the 1960s and has offered them to me. I just can't afford them right now. He told me they are not going anywhere and to let him know when I am ready to purchase them.

I have purchased cards from Bob in the past and he is a great guy. He also has an amazing collection - check out this #1 set of his.

BTW, he is also a member of these message boards, but doesn't post frequently - his id is psa10fan.

  • Thanks for your comments on the cards I listed in my ebay store. One of the reasons I've posted these is because many people have requested seeing a scan of some of my 10s.
I currently have 3 kids in college and....well, you know the mantra. So, I have to part with a few for now. But, I still love collecting 10s, especially one of one Hall of Famers.
I recognize the asking price on some of these is high by hobby standards, but I truly think the hobby has yet to recognize the true value of some of these 10s based on scarcity and the likelihood that none or very few additional ones will acheive these grades.
By comparison, I remember when a 1952 Topps PSA 8 of Herm Wehmeier went for $25,000 because there were only 4 graded. Suddenly, the population went up, and prices plummeted. We all remember the $100,000 plus paid for the SI Tiger Woods 10.
I see collectors almost daily paying 10 and 20 times the SMR for commons from the 50s up through the 70s. A common PSA 9 from 1976 brought over $200 last week on ebay.
Again, thanks for the nice comments. I greatly enjoy the friendships I've made in the hobby, and hope to connect with many of you again.
Best wishes to all! Bob Earhart
  • It's interesting that there is in fact a PSA 10 OPC Ozzie Smith rookie with 176 being graded. Yet out of 5,900 Henderson rookies being graded, only 5 are PSA 10's. You'd think the OPC would be much tougher on a percentage basis.

It's almost shocking the Henderson population is so low. There's over 100 Ripken Rc PSA 10's and the 1979 Topps Ozzie Smith rookie is higher on a percentage basis (PSA 10's to total cards submitted).

There's close to a dozen 1980/81 Bird Magic PSA 10's. I imagine the 1981 Topps Montana rookie is also easier.

    Talk about a tough card.

Congrats on the Rose Mr.Earhart.It looks like this one is locked up.

I hope that since you sold yours it will make one of the other 2 come up for sale with an opening bid I can jump in on.image

  • I believe the other two are in the collections of some very avid
    Rose collectors.

Well,we'll just have to wait for the population to increase for another then.image

At the time the last 540 Rose was up for auction I put up the highlights 10 the day before.Christmas probably prevented my reserve to be met but it wound up selling anyway. The 540 ended around $600 or 650 the next day.

I wish at the time of building the 1980 set that I was able to put the Rose in there too when the set was not intended for resale.

That would have been nice to add to the other Gems

At one time I had all these in one place.

    # 1 1/1 10
    # 4 1/2 10
    # 100 1/2 now 3 or 4 10
    #235 Dawson 1/2 or 3
    #270 Schmidt
#393 Smith had 2 10s at one time
    #406 Molitor
    #450 Brett
    #600 Jackson 1/2
    #650 Morgan
    #700 Carew
    #720 Yaz

Hopefully someday someone else will do it again but get it further and with the 482 Henderson 580 Ryan and 540 Rose 10s.image

Anyhow, congrats on the Rose and the rest of those monsters you have up for sale.image

Sounds like you have a great 1980 set. There is a bunch of vending still out there, so I'm sure more 10s will show up.
I remember when there were only 3 10s from the whole set, including 2 Hendersons. It's amazing how few Roses and Hendersons
there are out of all the cards submitted. Henderson is very difficult on centering.
    Good luck in your collecting.

Thanks for the kind words,Bob.Owning is a past tense term around here but a remakrable experience nonethless.

At the time of getting to 93% complete in 17 to 20 months sitting here was 2/3 of the PSA 10 population.Plus a number of other notable difficult cards.

For vending,I get mixed reviews. Some like GoBoSox (cracking open 4 boxes and then being totally cracked that he has) to others having much better luck.As they say - it's the luck of the draw.

Best of luck on the Henderson, the centering is comparable to the Brett I had and that's nothing to sneeze at.

I wish we ran into eachother sooner but either way it was great to meet you here.

    Regards,Rob

    Tom...

PM me one of these days.

You said you got a Ryan 9.

The 580 or 302 and how did you do elsewhere?

  • #580. That was pulled from the first box I opened three months ago. The others from three weeks ago are at PSA.
