Crossover advice needed

I plan to cross-over a number of SGC graded 1968 and 1971 OPC baseball (they simply do a poor job at grading colored borders.) Is it better to crack the holders and send in raw, or in the SGC holder? My concern is that a PSA grader might feel as if they have to grade tougher than their competitor, thus I would receive the same or a lower PSA grade.

  • I don't think there's much truth to that rumor based on the cross-over results I've seen here. There has been plenty of upgrades.

To be perfectly honest there's no formula. If you think you received a fair grade in your current SGC holder than I would attempt crossing first with a min grade declared. If you think your card is better than the grade in the SGC holder than I would not be too afraid of cracking and re-submitting.

How good is your confidence as a grader?

  • I am sending 25 SGC 1972 Topps in for crossovers this week. I am leaving them in the SGC cases for a couple of reasons. 1: Because I don't want to take the risk of damaging the card while trying to get it out of the capsule. 2: To protect it better durring shipping. 3: So that if the PSA grader decides that it isn't an 8 I get the card back still graded at an 88 so I can sell it on ebay easier. I have cracked a few in the past and gotten them back as 7's so I lose money both ways. Thats my story and I am sticking with it.
Looking for 1971 Topps Football PSA 8 NQ or above, and slowly working my way into the 1962 Topps Football Set. Check out my 1972 Topps Football Set 100% Complete.
  • hey 67standup, your thread says your looking for key venezuelan cards. go to ebay and enter this auction item # 2788004163.
its a key 68 rookie card.
  • From my limited experience PSA has been absolutely brutal on 68 OPC's that I have submitted, including cards straight from an unopened pack. I think they have seen a lot of very very nice 68 Topps and must be using a similar standard. I have a large group that are very nice but have put off sending them in. Chances of high grades seem limited and the value of 68's in the market seems very low. While I am not planning on reselling, I have been able to pick up a few nice slabbed ones pretty cheap.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • mmm...if PSA is absolutely brutal on 68 OPCs, and the ones I sent to SGC received an a-s kicking, then I guess I'll save money by not crossing over. I only sent what I considered NM to SGC and received some 50 and 60 grades. In fact, I bought a few raw 1968 OPCs advertised as NM and received some 60 grades. Thanks everyone for all of your advice.

  • My experience is that SGC will give a higher grade to a card
with sharp corners but a centering problem one-way than PSA.

Specifically, cards that are, say 50-50 horizontally but 20/80 top to bottom will get an 88
while PSA would give a PSA 8 OC (or maybe just a 7). SGC doesn't know the term OC.

With regard to 'do I send it in to PSA' I tend to look at the centering each way.

For example if the SGC 92s are "too OC" despite razor corners I'll just take my chance
selling on ebay rather than sending in to cross over. Have too few cards to try to do the SGC
set registry, unless I find it serves as a way to list what I have and get offers on them (or do
I just list them below). Also noted so FEW are doing sgc registry compared to PSA for 1967,
    the only year I checked).

Or with 88's it's like "why bother" submitting. Why spend the money to cross a 1967
257 Charley Smith 88 - many hi-POP common 8's are going for less than 10 bucks on eBay these
days. Even better to just put it into my "sell-set" than try to sell. One more graded card
in the sell set rather than 9 more dollars into my account.

extra '67 sgc's sitting around: (where I don't feel the 92's would cross to 9's, and some of the 88s
    were already refused an 8):
    174 88, 257 88, 259 92, 270 88, 288 88, 357 88, 407 88, 437 92, 516 88, 526 88, 560 86

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
