Happenings at the Pelham, Alabama show

Well - even for a small show, the market continues to show brisk activity for anything and everything that's key date, better date, or high grade classic material. It seemed that nice MS65 and better Walkers, Morgans, gold, and anything prior to 1930 was getting a lot of attention. Prices still seem to be somewhat on the high side, though moderating, depending on the series. GSA Carson City's are still extremely hot and commanding good premiums as well as lots of interest.

At the same time sales to collectors were brisk. At one point between the opening of the show and for the next 2 hours, there seemed to be 3 and 4 people at every single table and sales were pretty brisk. Once things died down I went off to hunt some goodies that I had been thinking about for a while.

First, I had been thinking that it was a shame that I didn't have a decent 1909 VDB Lincoln. Even though I don't collect Lincoln's actively anymore, I thought this nice MS65RD in a ratller holder was nice for the grade, with no carbon spots and decent surfaces. The picture came out a little blurry, but I'm kinda tired image

I also spotted what I thought was an unusual looking 1934 Medium Motto Washington. Unusual, because it displayed what I thought was a pretty good strike for the grade, although upon closer examination I noticed some weakness on the reverse, but that's kinda typical. Also unusual about this piece is the luster. Although I couldn't quite capture it on the first pass, the obverse, particularly, is extremely lustrous, which for this year I think is a little off beat. Finally, the thing that really caught my attention was a very beautiful blue ring around the circumference of the obverse, and between 2 and 4 O'clock on the reverse. You can see some of the ring on the picture below, but not all the way through - what can I tell you - I shot only one pic of the three coins that I got. The quarter is graded MS65 in an old PCI Black holder.

The final tidbit I picked up - and this one was before the doors opened, was a nice MS63 1885 GSA Carson City. The obverse displays typical MS63 dings, and is blast white with nice cartwheel luster. The reverse was obviously the prize. A very well preserved surface covered in layers of copper, gold and blue going from north to south, all with great underlying luster. Being that the coin was just above ask for the grade I couldn't pass it up.

All in all it was a very enjoyable day, and I'm looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings. At the show were Tassa, Five Cents, Hookooeykoo, and Dahlonega. We'll see if any other board members wonder over our way tomorrow image

Great Newps. I really like the GSA. Nice toning on the Rev.
  • Here's a different view of the quarter - you can see the luster and colors a lot better.
