A coinfool's Question about regrades

Hello all,

Before I ask this question, please remember that I am a coinfool and be gentle with me--it's my first timeimage Anyway, I need your opinion and knowledge on 2 coins:

1. 1892-S Morgan--From this board (coin price guide), the coin is valued at $185 at "EF", and $2,200 @ AU. The coin was graded by PCGS @ XF45. How far is XF-45 from AU? Is it worth getting regraded, depending on the gap between the 2 grades (if they are very close, I would resubmit it and hope for a higher grade). I would value your opinion cuz I'm a coinfool.

2. 1886-O Morgan-- From this board (coin price guide), the coin is valued at $105 at AU, and $500 @ MS-60. The coin was graded by PCGS @ AU55. How far is AU55 from MS60? Is it worth getting regraded, depending on the gap between the 2 grades (if they are very close, I would resubmit it and hope for a higher grade). I would value your opinion cuz, once again, I'm a coinfool.

The upside potential is great if a higher grade could be achieved, but if they are too far away to achieve this higher grade, then it's not worth it. If it's close---oh baby. I would love to hear from those who know to one who doesn't. This is my first submission--I was so stressed out!!!
Peace,

coinfool

  • pictures would help
  • I don't know about your #1, but I would think that in #2, you would have an easier time getting an AU58 reslabbed at MS62 than an AU55 at MS60, because an AU55 should be showing some definite, undeniable wear. You never know, though.

    Good luck!

    Coinfool-

The graders aren't stupid. They know when the price difference between two grades is really high and it seems the higher the difference, the stingier they get. You may be succesful, but the odds are against it. If you are intent on doing this anyway, I suggest you look at as many coins as you can in the grades you are talking about until you get a "feel" for what's what.

Pic's would help on the 92-s as mentioned. If really a borderline coin, then it could go either way next time around but most likely Xf-45 again. if it has a little more "PQ" ness or umf, you might luck out and get it.

But, I can tell you with out looking at coin #2 that if graded Au-55, youll never get MS from that coin. It must have obvious signs of wear on the coin.

Crack out a random 45 and you are just as likely to get a 40 as a 50. Without knowing what you're doing, the crackout game is a losing proposition.

  • Thank you for the insights. I wish I had pics. for you all, but they are still at PCGS. I only received the info. through e-mail & not the acutal coin yet. But the overall consensus I get from you is "not likely at all" for the most part. Oh well, it didn't hurt to try to ask. BTW, how many points is XF45 away from AU? I don't know the grading system well at all except for MS 60-70. Could someone direct me to a website that shows all the varieties (sp?) of the grading scale. I truly don't know how far an XF45 is away from an AU, etc.
Thanks again and Happy Valentines Day to all!!!!!image
