If this is true I heard that Texas wanted Contreras too. NO WAY, would I trade Soriano and Contreras for AROD as good as he is. I am not so glad about losing Soriano either. What's your opinion Joe Stalin? LOL
Screw boston what about us mets fans !! we missed out on arod 3 years ago! then lose out on vlad this year! man we are good at one thing though signing all the damn over the hill free agents. look at our pitching staff this year!!! if you turn back the clock 7 years we are a shoe in for the world series now we are shoe in for the sh$ter!
as a yankees fan... can't say I am thrilled about the prospect of getting a-rod. he's a terrific player... but... the success of recent teams and even the success of the late 90's yankees seemed to have more to do with good chemistry and solid pitching. I was truly hoping boston was going to get a-rod... then... when garciaparra walked, a new curse might start... I think the yanks should get the grinning joe randa to play third and spend a billion on something else...
I just got home from the City as we say here in New York and was looking forward to seeing Board reaction on this "Trade".
Just listening to the New York sports radio station, WFAN, you heard joyous exultation from Yankee fans to suicidal remarks from Mets fans...the Yankees get A-Rod and the Mets sign Ricky Bottalico and James Baldwin. If it weren't so pitiful it would be funny.
In the end, as a fan of Baseball, I will always dislike and disavow the Steinbrenner pettiness that is as much behind this move as any other motive...we got him Boston and you don't..nyah, nyah ne ne nah.
His obscene free agent payroll is almost the ruination of the game and its estrangement from the fan. This will all have a backlash that isn't good for the game of baseball, my first love before any team. Call me a purist, but I detest everything about this owner.
love him or hate him "THE BOSS" always tries to get the best team on the field. you have to admit that: lofton jeter arod giambi shefield posada williams matsui almonte will score alot of runs. solid starters, flash and mo in the pen. just when i thought 2004 was going to be an off year for the yanks.
Bernie Williams batting 7th!?! That is one STACKED lineup! They will cakewalk to the playoffs. Once in, it is a crapshoot like the playoffs always are, but they stand the best chance by virtue of being the best team. No need to lament the loss of Clemens.... Kevin Brown steps right in. Javy Vazquez is quite a fine replacement for Pettite. I am not a Yankee fan, I am a Cub fan!
Steinbrenner gets a lot of criticism for spending the money, but being a Cub fan and watching them absolutely rake in the cash every year, and TWO FOLD last year, raise ticket prices across the board, add 400 more premium seats, start to collect revenue from the rooftop owners, and running a dishonest ticket scalping operation of their own tickets....... then seeing Latroy Hawkins and Todd Walker as their big FA pick ups? I wish Steinbrenner owned the Cubs! There is no reason in the world why the Cubs could not have made a push for VLad, or Tejada(a little overrated, but HUGE upgrade of A. Gonzalez). They too should have been knocking on Texas's door for Arod. Instead, all of the drunks will continue to flood Wrigley, not being able to name anyone on the team besides Sosa, Prior, or Wood, and the Tribune owners just take our money(not mine, I only go for free now!) and run. At least Steinbrenner puts it back into the team. Yankee fans should be happy.
I want to throw up every time I see McPhail sitting in his yuppie white sweater, living off the work of the Twins success(which was a result of the guy before him getting the core of those teams), only in baseball because daddy got him in. He talks about being on his yacht in interviews, while honest hard working people pay their money just wanting to be part of the fun and excitment of a winning team....and he and other Tribune honchos are just taking the money and running. Yeah, Steinbrenner is loaded too, but he has always tried to put out a product for the fans. My rant is done.
Skinpinch!!! GIVE ME A BREAK MAN! ID LOVE TO HAVE YOUR PICHING STAFF THIS YEAR! YOU HAVE 2 OF THE MOST DOMINATING PITCHERS IN BASEBALL! PLUS 2 OF THE BEST OUTFIELDERS IN BASEBALL! CUBS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS AGAIN THIS YEAR, YOU CAN BOOK IT(UNLESS PRIOR GETS HURT)! MARK PRIOR MIGHT WIN 25 GAMES THIS YEAR!! YEAH I IM SAYING IT 25 GAMES 25 GAMES 25 GAMES! MARK IT!
AS WHAT IM SAYING ABOUT THE YANKEES IS ONE THING I THINK ITS A BAD TRADE! YES AROD HAS THE NAME BUT SORIANO HAS ALMOST EQUAL STATS AND IS 175 MILLION CHEAPER. AND HE IS 6 YEARS YOUNGER. WE SHALL SEE WHAT HAPPENS!
Really? i was on another board and someone stated a 6 year difference. my bad on that! Still i cant believe any of you yankee fans dont seem to care about soriano departing in this trade! Baserunning is a key to winning games in baseball and yankees are letting that walk.
Sure I feel a little bad. I have two 1999 PSA Gem Mint 10 Topps Traded Rookie cards of Soriano, one being a Chrome, but getting the best player in baseball heals the pain a little.
I am a committed Yankee fan and this is all unexpected. I was elated with the signing of Sheffield and Brown (stupid for Dodgers letting both go or treating them badly).
The Rangers really have some nerve letting their team captain go away like that. I thought by making A-Rod their captain, the Rangers secured his spot in Texas lore. Don't be so harsh on the opportunists known as the Yankees, but be appalled by the Rangers for whoring themselves for money. They get a huge financial relief in this deal, but let their centerpiece go.
A-Rod is no longer the captain now. Its sad that this title is being given away or treated like some dirty sock. Jeter is a good choice to remain captain. He got that title fair and square and is a great leader taking over from Don Mattingly.
I like the Yankees to stick with more native New Yorkers or Yankee farm hands to really keep it a New York team. I hated to see Pettite go. A-Rod grew up in New York if I am not mistaken. Torre is a New Yorker, so I am glad to see him there. The hitting coach is from Indiana, but he has been a Yankee forever.
"So many of our DREAMS at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we SUMMON THE WILL they soon become INEVITABLE "- Christopher Reeve
love them or hate them they buy players they are not opportunists. a-rod has been in the wide open for a year and a half waiting for someone to come along and pay the price.
.being a captain in pro sports is the same as being the FASTEST reader in the remedial class.
a-rod is one the top 3 players in baseball, i don't think he can do anything but help the yankees. he has more money than he can ever spend, a mvp trophy while playing on a last place team. he is really a nice guy and a class act.
i heard numerous times about his 252 million dollar contract and how he sold out the mariners, he was just greedy. ask yourself if you could go to another company for 5 times the money your making now, would you do it. with a guarantee for 10 years. i have done it a couple times. i own 3 companies and i have had it done to me.
last but not least, i feel sorry for soriano as he will waste away in the texas heat, he will loose his tv exposure, his 30 or so home runs will not mean as much as they do in pinstripes.
i agree with FAB4 , i feel bad for soriano having to leave NY. he's kind of like a home grown product for the yanks. he should continue to flourish (if he stays away from the fastball off the plate) in texas, but the exposure just isn't there. in two years he'll be playing in another city for a contender.
kuhlman, that is exactly what burns me...the Cubs pitching!! They have a golden opportunity right now, and they are giong to piss it away by not making a push for the guys I mentioned...THERE IS NO EXCUSE!! Houston is a LOCK to win that division, and St. Louis will be just as good as the Cubs. Houston's offense is far superior than the Cubs. They missed Oswalt half the year last year and still finsihed a game behind the over-achieving Cubs. Now they get Oswalt the full year, add Clemens aned Pettite, have Ensberg playing full-time... that more than offsets the loss of Wagner where Dotel will step right in without missing a beat.
Prior and Wood wil be right where you expect them. Zambrano, based on what he did, WILL not do as well as last year. Clement will continue is mediocrity. A. Ramirz will have on OB% of .310 and be the worst defensive third baseman in baseball. A. Gonzalez is awful. Grudzielanek will play more than he deserves over betting hitting Walker. D. Lee is fine. If any outfielder gets hurt, as Alou, or Sosa will, then you will see Tom Goodwin patrolling the outfield(yuck), because they don't have a lead off hitter, and goodwin si perceived as a lead off man just because he is fast, forget that he never gets on base. Hollandsworth is a good utility man, but he is often hurt too. This is all assuming Patterson even comes back healthy. Patterson is still a horrible OB% man, he had a fluky first half RBI wise last year, and he just started to come back to reality before he got hurt. As a man who predicted and won a little cash on the Cubs winning their division last year, I will be betting the opposite this year!
Steinbrenner needed to make this move to satisfy his own ego and mainly to top what has been a Red Sox off season. Signing Arod is not that big a deal. With the exception of HR's and RBI's, Soriano had better numbers. Arod is not going to be hitting in the Ball Park anymore, and his totals may show that this season.
The losses the Yankees suffered add up to be more than the addition of Arod.

Hey Phils fan - Why did Kevin Millwood sign with the Phils when he said he would never play for that team or play in front of those 'horrible' fans again?

kuhlmann,
I suggest that you do your homework....Soriano is 2 1/2 years younger than AROD:
