Jefferson Variety Set Finally 100% Complete – Added 1942 D over Horizontal D

It took over 5 years to fill the last open spot in my Jefferson variety set. With the addition of a 1942 D over horizontal D in MS62FS, my set is now 100% complete. (Well actually it shows 99% complete until I call PCGS customer service with a now invalid certification number.)

In my opinion the 1942 D over horizontal D is definitely the most difficult Jefferson variety in mint state condition.

I guess I now need to update my signature line. image

I noticed this today and was going to start a congrats thread. I noticed the nograde, but then it was gone when I looked again (but only showed 99% complete).

    Congrats on a fine accomplishment.

    Bravo indeed!

The 42-D/D is a monster. All I have is an XF40 and I feel lucky at that! If anyone can point me at a Mint State example -- heck, even an AU would be wonderful! -- please do!!

    Frank:

My hearty congratulations -- and admiration -- on completing a sterling set. I know how long you have been hunting for the Horizontal D. I am delighted you finally found one and join your thrill in completing your Jeffs -- a much tougher task than most collectors realize. Again, my compliments, sir! You are a true numismatist in the word's best meaning. image

  • Congratulations! A truly impressive accomplishment. That appears to make all of your Jefferson nickels sets complete. Is it search (and search and search) for upgrades? Or are you going to expand to some other set? Some other nickel of course?

  • Excellent job and a big congratulations, Frank!

The varieties are what make Jefferson nickels so interesting to me, and your set is truly outstanding in every way!

Any chance we'll see some pictures someday? I would really love to see any coins in your set that show off toning! IMO, spectacular toned gem+ Jeffs are few and far between, but the ones that are out there can be stunning!

    Congrats!

You have set the standard for high quality Jefferson Nickel collecting.

I hope my search takes less than 5 years, but it is not looking hopeful.

  • Congrats! What was so hard? Finding the coin? The right price? The grade you were looking for?

    Frank,

I just noticed this coin (or it's twin) in my L&C list I received. I would assume this is where you acquired it.

  • All:

Thanks for all your comments. This was definitely a challenge to complete this set.

    Coolkarma:

For now I will continue to look for upgrades. Maybe in a few years I will sell it all!

    Ken:

I do plan to post more pictures. I just need to find the time. Im sorry to say very few of my coins exhibit any toning.

    GottaGetCoins:

In about 15 years I have seen about 5 1942D over horizontal D for sale. This is in my opinion the most difficult of the Jefferson varieties in mint state condition. PCGS has only 4 and now maybe 5 in MS62 or higher.

    Purchase was indeed from L&C.

    Bob:

So are there now two MS65 coins? Did you find this coin yourself? A truley amazing grade. Congratulaions on the highest graded!!!

    hey Frank

thanks for the update. in my opinion, your accomplishment is what set building is all about-----a slow process with an attainable goal. you realize, of course, that this carries with it a sort of double whammy. you get the kudos for a job well done but now that big "RED X" on your back is bolder and in day-glo!!!image

i, for one, would like to hear the 5-year story of how you tracked down the various coins. the search is what's fun and the accomplishment of completion is almost a letdown. who knows, maybe another hitherto unknown variety will pop up and you can strap on the Adidas and start fresh!!

    on your mark, get set........................image
