Question?

I don't talk much here, but I do read alot of what you guys have to say. There are some very informed people on this board, who make some good points.

The facts:

I am just starting to collect some 86-87 Fleer Basketball (I know, not really Vintage, but still hard to find in good condition). Anyway I had 2 specimens in front of me yesterday and did not know which way to go. There were both #27 Joe Dumars RC. The problem was one card was very well centered, but the edges were miscut a little and the corners had some rounding. The other one had great corners and edges, but the centering was more 70-30 or 60-40 at best.

Now which one would you have chosen?

Any help will be appreciated.

  • Philip,

I wouldn't choose either of them. I would pick up a nice BGS 8.5 on ebay for about $10. Based on the way that you described the two cards, a BGS 8.5 would be a lot nicer and it's still pretty cheap.

You didn't say whether you were collecting the set raw or graded, but even if you are collecting a raw set, I would think that you could find a nicer example, unless you have a very small budget - which you also did not mention.

Hope that helped, sorry if it didn't. Good luck in your quest!

JEB - Is right (I've been saying that alot lately) No need to settle on a card like that. Theres a ton of them out there raw & graded, so grab one that meets all your needs. Now, if the 2 cards were in front of me, and I had only those to choose, I would get the oc version w/ great corners & edges. Although still oc it has straight from pack qualities, the other w/ rounded corners & mis cut edges doesn't appeal to me on a modern card regardless of the centering...jay
  • I agree with both....they're soooooooo smart!!! image
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"
  • The really odd thing here is that 1987 Fleer Basketball was designed to be off center top to bottom 70-30. To get a dead centered card, it has to be off centered. Good thing that Fleer is known for their off center cutting.
  • Yeah, I did forget to add a few things.

I am collecting a raw set to start. Maybe upgrade some of the key players later on.

Money is an issue, I am not looking to break the bank on this set (for the moment). I just want a nice example for my personal satisfaction.

I am also curious as to what Marty is talking about. Was that the 86-87 Fleer or the 87-88 Fleer? This is the first I have heard on this.

Also please feel free to leave more answers as to your opinion. I did pick up one of the Dumars, It was the one with sharp corners and a little OC. I was pleased and the price was right.
