  • Great observation!
It is a shame that this happens; people just do not spend enough time looking at what they are buying.
The upside is that the reserve has not yet been realized on this item.

  • Bbbbbut it catalogs for over $7000 and it's certified by the Larry Briggs Coin Grading Service so you know that it's true!

well, they're not full split, but about 40-50% by the picture which IS better than average for the date, I'd pay a lot more than $40 for the coin Lucy, but you're right, it's not worth anywhere near $500 much less $7000.

Let's assume for a moment the coin is actually a 65, regardless of the bands. Then assume the bands are NOT full. You can't really tell but it's probably a good bet. Let's just say it is an "almost" FB. If these assumtions are true this is definately NOT a $40 coin. I've seen "almosts" go as high as $300. Is $600 too much? Probably, since this is essentially a sight unseen auction. What is driving the price up more than it should are probably people, unknowingly, think this coin might actually BE a FB. This is probably not the case since it would probably would be in a PCGS already.

Actually the only money spend so far was been by the seller - Now at $776 it's still Reserve Not Met.

Stupider people may still be queued up though...

  • Anyone who spends 7000 or even 700 on a common dime with split bands should get a few therapy sessions thrown in.

Oh I know how "rare" they are. But a 1945 Mercury is still a common coin.

I really think when people bid on this kind of stuff they really don't take a good look at the coin itself.

I think we all agree not FB's, but still has nice band definition. Lots better than you typically see for 45 P.

But, I think the coin is a 64 at best at PCGS.

sure its common, but super super tough in full split bands.....

when the right one comes along, I'll step up to the plate and make a purchase.....

will someone think I need therapy?

I could gave a @%! if they do.......

    I got the money..... bummer......

I stepped upto the plate for a 53S MS65FBL Franklin... and I was very happy with that one....

  • If everyone sees the coin then we can all agree its a 1945 dime. Obviously note everyone can agree on what is or is not split bands. Split or not split is an opinion. To spend 40 bucks vs 7000 I'd want something that was not disputable.
  • The sad side of collecting...and someone will pay the price. What a shame
