Grade opinions on this coin?

Well, I solicited some opinions from some Forum members via PM, but will now throw it open to whomever cares to comment with the 42-P proof now in hand... will not offer my observations at this point so as to not influence opinions.

It's hard to say...If no hairlines, maybe 66-67?

PR-63 ?? Because of hairlines on the Obv and foreign matter on Obv between R&T of Liberty... Possibly 64?? I'm not that familiar with Jeff Nickel grading, but I assume that they are very strict when grading them.

  • Randy, I will say it is a PR-65. It looks like a very nice coin from the images.image

Front looks like a 63/4 reverse 66/7, 64 or 65 net. Real close to cameo, but not enough obverse mirrors from the picture.

I also know diddly/squat about grading Jeffs, but all of the hairlines on the obverse would seem to suggest a PR63 - attractive too!

Awesome coin, I agree with Keets, it's a 64/65 now, has 65/66 potential with some Cam goin on, quick dip by an experienced hand and this coin is a keeper

Current consensus grade using Adrian's method is 64.6 pre-NCS. We need one more.image

Thanks for the comments, all. Obverse is not as bad as photo seemingly indicates. There are no hairlines. That mark in front of Tom's face is a planchet flaw magnified by the lighting. There is a spot of album crud, as noted, that I think NCS can remove. The mirrors/luster on the obverse are as excellent as the obverse, the angle of the coin did not show it as such. The reverse is a solid CAM -- even the lettering -- in any service's holder, an excellent and scarce find on any pre-'50 Jeff. The obverse has decided contrast, but not as heavy. It likely falls a tad short of PCGS' standards, but could have a shot at NGC. From Tom's collar down, it is perhaps not as frosty as one might like. The mirrors and contrast on this coin really sell it. If it cleans up nice, it has an excellent shot at PR-67 with a star in any Jeff specialist's book for the contrast. I'll let you know how it comes out ... Again, I appreciate your insights.
