And now------for the Jefferson collector who has everything from the seller who has nothing!!

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just saw this item offered for sale and wondered if any members have ever owned or seen one. I know njcoincrank could help, are you out there?? It's most definitely a nice item to enhance even the finest of Jefferson collections. The one questionable point, of course, is it genuine?? A seller with an eBay feedback rating of zero is certainly no help there!!

So, any opinions about this items authenticity??

  • I have seen those before and want one. I have no idea how to tell if that one is authentic. It looks like the one I saw.

I'd love to have one of those - I'm not sure I'd trust this auction though, especially because I didn't know they existed.

Did they really "number" things back then like that? I really have never seen something that old numbered like that.

    hey Barracuda

they were in fact numbered and the appearance of the seal and the statement pictured look like the real deal. they were an item prepared by Felix Schlag most probably as a way of "tooting his own horn" and raising some money, an example of good ol' American ingenuity at work in the Capitalistic sense.

actually I take that back. I saw one recently that had whats pictured there, but
for some reason I wanna say Felixs pic was there also. But I do remember the format
and that appears to be ok, but I could seriously fake one in about 5 mins.

    hey Pontiac

the only thing i see that looks out of place is the tilted picture of the original design, but that may just be a fact of time and the adhesive failing. everything is in the correct orientation and the script all looks correct.

what leads you to believe otherwise to make the above statement??

  • I don't have it with me here at work, but I seem to remember there being a picture of one of these in the Breen Encyclopedia(?) Is that something to compare it to?

I saw one of those in Earl Schill's shop in downtown Detroit back in the '80's. My recollection is that it was a $100-200 item at the time. The item in the auction looks to be genuine.

I have one identical to the one pictured on ebay (except mine is #17 or 19/150) - see also picture in Breen encyclopedia. The wooden frame on ebay is identical to mine. I believe the frame is original but have also seen one offered in a more modern metal frame. I paid $1000 for it in early 90's at a Long Beach show. I have seen several others offered at auction in the past 15 years including #1/150.

  • if you want it, you could always ask the seller for a few references since he has no feedback. Nice item!

I can't offer an opinion on the authenticity of the eBay item, but Heritage sold Bill Fivaz' example of same in its ANA auction. I placed what I thought I was a healthy bid, only to get blown away. I can't find it now in the Heritage archives, but it ended up a few hundred dollars north of a grand ... a super neat item. Bowers relates how the starving artist Schlag issued these to raise a few bucks for himself in one of his books.
