  • '97 SMS Jeffersons were matte proofs. Yours is a circulation strike. From the looks of it I'd say it has full steps.

Ditto on the negative SMS... But, FS, for sure. Kinda beat up, tho...

something i,ve wondered about on these modern Jeffs and their steps is ; see the 4th step from the bottom
above the T in Monticello? That step is always slightly indented. does this affect the step designation at all?
    probably not huh.

Correction Frank. The `97 P SMS Jeffs are not Proofs.Same with the 1994 SMS Jeff. They are `matte-finish` business strikes made to
have the appearance of a matte-proof coin.
Still a great LOW MINTAGE coin to have.

  • I also don't think that it is SMS because of the bag marks, esp. in the hair, and the shine. The matte proof 1997-P is not usually that shiny and usually more pristine, almost perfect wrt chatter. However, according to the PCGS price guide, a high-grade non-SMS with FS is worth more than the same SMS coin, I think.

I still need to get the '97 SMS for my set. I have the '94 and half of the pre-1960 proofsimage
  • I've included a photo of a 1994-P SMS Jefferson below. The 1997-P SMS Jeff has the exact same matte finish. One can argue if they are proofs or not, but they are clearly intended to be different from business strikes. I really like the look.

I thought the 94P sms Jeffs were more common than the 94P non sms and the 97P sms Jeffs were less common than the non sms's ???? Yet all are business strikes right???

    hello
    2 97-P strikes...1 business one not....2 94-P strikes, 1 business one not..

94 sms is more common than the 97 sms

what I am saying is theres 2 phili strikes for those years..the $$$$$$$$ ones are the
matte issues like Carl pictured above.
