Really surprised by my coin purchase from Heritage today

I just received a 1872 PCGS MS62 Seated Quarter (in an older green holder)
that I had purchased from Heritage. It was sold after the last auction with a
direct sale price. When it arrived, I could hardly believe the difference in
condition between it and a MS61 (NGC) that I already have. I had earlier
tried to cross the NGC coin and it didn't cross as a 61. This "62" looked fine
on the reverse, but the front is horrible. There isn't a clear LIBERTY, there is
no where near the amount of detail on the head and dress that I should see,
and it has a dull grey abraisive dead look to it. I suppose that there could have
been something in the die blocking a full strike so it is technically uncirculated,
but I want no part of the coin.

Has anyone ever tried to return a coin to Heritage? I know that if you buy from
an auction where you have visually seen the coin it is a "done deal"; but I had
not examined this coin before.

Let me also say that I have bought coins from Heritage for several years and have
NEVER had a problem with them. And technically, they gave me what I ordered, a
Seated Quarter in a PCGS MS62 slab. I just don't want to spend that much money
on a coin that I don't enjoy looking at. Definately a lesson on the value of having
a dealer be your agent at an auction to evaluate the coin at the sight before bidding.
Buy the coin, not the slab!!!

  • 7 day return policy. You shouldn't have any problems.

    Terms of Sale Return Policy

    * All orders come with an unconditional seven-day return privilege. We're not satisfied until you are.
    * All returns must be in their original, undamaged holder and must be accompanied by a copy of the invoice.
    * You are responsible for fully insuring and the safe delivery of any returns.
    * Returns after seven days are subject to market fluctuations and will be valued accordingly.
    * There is no return privilege on any invoice where payment was received late (this includes bounced checks, etc.) Extended Payment Plan purchases are not returnable.
  • I purchased two Morgans in NGC MS66 holders last year at auction from Heritage. Both might have gone 5 at PCGS on a good day so I returned them and paid fees.
  • I think there's some kind of return privelege, but with a "restocking fee" or something like that - call and ask because what ever return privilege you might have is time limited.

Briggs says that 1872 quarters come well struck and that is my experience as well. This almost sounds like a PCGS review situation - it should have been graded a couple points down if the strike is as bad as you say. The services, unfortunately, do not always grade down for strike characteristics on these coins. This is an opportunity to cherrypick if you are a specialist.

Anyway, as far as Heritage goes, if you are a regular customer I think they will allow at least one "mulligan" on Internet bids.

    Robert -

Send it back. You're clearly are not happy with it. Tell them why. With their return policy, it should be no problem.

I sent back several auction coins in the past, EVEN BEFORE THEY HAD A RETURN POLICY. One was a low grade Chain cent in a SEGS holder. It had a green pitted are that they "failed" to mention. Again, this was before they had a return policy on their auction sales. I just shipped it back. They promptly refunded my money. I had purchased a lot of material from them, and I don't think they wanted to lose me.

Anyway, even if you are outside the 7 day window, drop them an email (or call) and ship it tomorrow. They are a good outfit, and will take care of you.

If you are unhappy notify them of your intention to return the coin. I am not sure if a restock fee applies here or not. I returned one coin that I bid on for someone else. It takes a few extra days for them to credit your account tho.

Heritage should easily cover this situation. While many or most 1872 quarters may come well struck, I have seen a number that weer not. Flatness in "Liberty" is not unusual for this date imo. Sometimes the words are very hazy and weak looking even on choice/gem specimens. I vaguely recall this auction retread coin and it was not impressive. I have owned 3 or 4 unc 1872 quarters and none of them had any particular eye appeal for the grade. Like the 1870 and some of the surrounding P-mints, they are often seen somewhat lackluster even though often semi-P/L.

  • I have bought a few coins from Heritage on approval with no problems...... Sent 1 back but never paid a restocking fee.....

Maybe it depends on how much the coin is valued at, and wether you have filled out a credit report with them as to wether or not you pay a restocking fee.image
  • Well, it sounds like everyone has had positive experiences with their returns,
so hopefully there won't be any problem with mine. Since I just got it Thursday,
I'll call this afternoon and find out how they want to handle it.

    Thanks for the input!!
