copy stand question for digital cameras?

I am looking for a sturdy copy stand that will not tip when camera is mounted at a price that will not break the bank. Also there is another issue of how many lights may be needed when taking pictures of raw & slab coins. I have a nikon coolpix 4300 camera. I would appreciate any help provided.

    My copy stand.
I use one or two lights, just plain incandescent bulbs. Do a custom white balance, if available w/your camera.

So far as the copy stand goes, I would suggest trying some of the larger camera stores in your area. Decent copy stands will probably run you in the neighborhood of $150-200. Try eBay as well. You may find a nice one for somewhat less. Copy stands are not particularly common items these days so your selection locally may not be very good.

I have one like Barry. It does the job nicely.

  • I built one myself with scrap wood and hardware which cost less than $2.00. I imagine you could start from scratch and build it for less than $10 yourself. It is wood, painted black, and includes the abiltiy to adjust the camera height. It doesnt have lights mounted on it, but this would be easy to do (or just use lamps).

I don't have any pictures of it but i would be glad to take some if you are interested. Leave a msg here or PM me. In theory I could even build one for you.

These two long appendages attached to the sides of my body work well as a "copy stand". They're multifunctional, flexible, portable, and best of all - were free! I think they were free anyway - I don't remember how they got there.

  • Russ or Barry,

How far can you extend the camera from the support post? I take mostly coin album pics, and I need the extra extension. With my tripod, that's the biggest problem I have.

    Thanks.

  • my PM's are not working so I am going to post this here:

I have a brand new copy stand for sale if you are interested. PM me for details. I will respond to your pm a little later when I get home. My copy stand has 6 lights (3 on each side).

I use the cloud dome setup and that is why this one is for sale.

    Mine looks like this one

This is what I use. I invert the holder to get the camera closer.

gcoin, here is the one I made for my Canon G2. It attaches to the center wood strip to the tripod mount and can slide up or down rails depending on use.

What desk? Is there a desk in there somewhere? Can't seem to see it.

CD uses the same kind of mouse that I do. His desk area looks like mine too.

  • If anyone is still interested in this topic and you are handy with scrap wood and a drill...here is one that I found last year. With a few mods to the basic set up I use something similar to this. I am still trying to figue out the best lighting / background / white balance combos.

Keep a note book - which camera and settings you use shooting which coin variety (copper, gold, silver) and the best result yield using which lighting/background. It helps as a quick reference later.

  • Here are a couple of quick pictures of my home-made setup. It is made from scrap wood, with 1/4 inch bolts to secure the camera and to adjust the camera height. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done.

I attach my Nikon 4300 to it with a 1/4 (20) thumbscrew. I use 2 or three lights depending upon what I am shooting.
