1981 S SBA$ PCGS MS67. Has it been made?....YES!!! Photo attached!

I see one listed on the Registry but not in the POP reports. The last time this happened it lasted a couple of weeks and then disapeared without an explanation from PCGS.

Any body have any info?

Any bets??????

I would love to see it if it is real.

It is listed in the Pop report. You need to look up the individual number (9580) to get the current pops. They should be listed in the pop report for the whole series later today.

Not sure if it is real or not (there is also an 1873-S Seated Dollar listed, which is unknown anywhere. Not the grade, the coin)

  • I've been reading for a while and decided to join, hopefully I can learn something or put my 2 cents in once in a while.
Well maybe 100 cents, I collect Dollars!

What would this coin do to the MS66 values?

The effect on lower grade coins would depend on whether or not the owners
of those coins want to upgrade and how it would affect the demand for them.
Generally it would tend to lower the demand as some potential buyers wait out
    the availability of the MS-67.

    Welcome aboard.

  • In general I agree with Cladking. However, as this coin is quite rare in MS66 and this would be a POP 1 coin, I do not believe the price would drop. There seems to be increasing interest in the SBA$ series and the prices have been on a continuous rise for the last 5 years (with a recent jump as well).

I really doubt that this coin is real. I could be wrong but this has happened at least twice before. We will see if the coin shows up on the market or just disapears from the POP report.

The good thing the 81(s) date has going for it is the fact that no Modern silver Dollar Commem would mistakenly be entered as an SBA by accident. Compare that to say the 1982(d) Kennedy Half Dollar in PCGS-MS68 (pop 8) which, IMHO are mostly, if not all, 1982(d) GW Commem Halves entered incorrectly by PCGS.

  • I just wondered, I remember the last time this happened with the pop's. I had just purchased the 66 for my set. I have been trying to put together another set but I feel the recent prices have been to high for the more common ones. Still going to finish another set it just might take longer this time.

It has been updated in the pops. Apparently, it is a pop 1 coin. image Congrats to who ever made it.

I have a definite answer to my question. YES!!!

I was contacted by the maker of this coin, purchased it and received it today.

It is the nicest 1981S SBA$ that I have ever seen and completes my set in MS67 or better.

I hope the price was the 5 figure amount you had offered in the past (but certainly don't expect you to disclose this).

At least you will have all 0's in the right hand column again. Congrats.

Dbldie55; The thread that you are referring to was from June of 2001. Here is an excerpt:

As for the mythical 1981S MS68 my open offer of $10,000 still stands, but I doubt that I will be fortunate enough to find anyone willing to sell it if it is ever graded by PCGS. While I believe that all 3 million 81S are still uncirculated, my estimate is that about 10% have been searched to find the approximately 400 that have been submitted to PCGS. Sixty have made MS66 and none higher. There probably are a few MS67 coins out there, and I hope to be the one that finds one, but I doubt that a MS68 will ever be found.

I did offer 5 figures for a 1981S SBA$ but not in MS67. I ended up paying some serious $$$$ anyhow as you might imagine.

However, my offer still stands. $10,000 for the first 1981S PCGS MS68 SBA$.

My apologies. I remember the amount, just missed the grade. Stranger things have happened I suppose.

Hey drgolan did the coin come from a mint set or roll?? Also, could you post some pictures of it?
  • DRGDRG Posts: 817
To the best of my knowledge the 1981 SBA$ coins were only released in mint sets. Although, I have been told that the mint sold some in rolls/bags, I have never seen any confirmation of this.

The coin that I purchased reportedly came from a mint set.

I will attempt to post a photo when I have more time..sorry.

The mint made an excess of the '81 sets and these were dismantled and most of the
coins were mixed in with 1982 issue coins. Repotedly some of the SBA's were mixed
with 1980 bags and the bulk were sold separately. These were at a pretty favorable
price of around $2.50 each if memory serves. These sales were in the mid-'80's when
the price of the set was quite high.

It was not a very large number of coins or sets involved. (perhaps in the range of 150,000)

Hey drgolan. Is that a big gash in her chin and cheek?
  • DRGDRG Posts: 817
It is in fact a small tick on her chin and a less then perfect cheek. Overall a 67.0 - 66.8 . But that is as good as it gets for this paricular coin.

    Super coin David. Congratulations.
  • Great coin David. Congratulations!image

As the holder of the #2 set I must say that whoever made it must be one "straight Up" guy (or gal)! image I thought I would get emails that would start a bidding war for the coin. But never did. Apparently he saw where the coin should be and that's were it wound up. image So many out there would have attempted to get the #1 and #2 sets bidding up the price. I would not have been a player in that contest anyway. (that's one of the reasons I deleted my current registry set last week)
