let's have a contest: too much negativity lately

we have had so much negativity lately lets get back to the fun of cards: if this is off topic i'm sorry but i think it's time to give away some cards:

the winners will receive a set of 1976 topps wonderbread football cards. 24 cards in the set and i bought a bunch and all are mint some are o/c but they are free. give to a kid that collects or use them for card flipping. i will ship them and all will come in card savers and penny sleeves. i will give 3 sets away and only 1 per person. everyone will have a chance to win. 1 question will be football,1 baseball and 1 basketball. i am from tyler, texas and all question will be about athletes from my hometown. first right guess will win.

football : earl campbell is the tyler rose, he had twin brothers that also played at texas: what were their names

baseball: jerry mumphrey played high school ball in chapel hill, texas which is a part of tyler. he was drafted by st. louis but was traded to cleveland for what player?

basketball: what #1 draft pick in 1991 was born in tyler.

i will post when a sport has been won.

  • Larry Johnson might have been born in Tyler but he played highschool ball at Skyline Highschool in Dallas. He wanted to play college ball for SMU, which is in Dallas and where I attended, but they turned him down because of grades. DOH! Couldn't they have bent the rules like every other college??? Just day dreaming of a possible Pony Express on the hardwood.........

  • Another story but this time about Earl Campbell. My old workout partner played highschool football against Earl Campbell. Scott was a 135lb cornerback and had the privilege of tackling Earl on a sweep. When Earl ran him over, Scott quickly grabbed on to a leg and after being dragged about 5 yards he decided the only way to bring Earl down was bite him on the calf! .......... About 5 years ago Scott saw Earl somewhere in Texas promoting his hotlinks and introduced himself and told him," you might not remember me but I'm the one that bit you on the calf our senior year in a highschool football game." Earl quickly said," your the little sh!t that gave me this scare!" and lifted his pantleg to show Scott he still had the scare on his calf. They both laughed about it and Scott apologized and Earl accepted. I can't guarantee this is 100% true but Scott sure did make it seem believable.

Butcher> Remember, all of SMU's rule-bending was happening with the Eric Dickerson-era football program. They bent enough rules for all the other sports at SMU.

    never.

earl campbell i've spent time around him years ago. his hot links are awesome, he also has smoked sausage. it sold pretty well in texas but no where else.

jerry mumphrey and i went to the same school. he was 6 years older than i was. been to his house a few times.

larry johnson i saw him play when he was in junior high, he looked like an adult against the other kids.

also in a little town called BIG SANDY about 30 miles from us is where david overstreet played. we would go on friday night and watch him get 250 yards and 6 or 7 td's in the first half. i think he had 56 that year.

  • About SMU football, I agree they did get busted and was made an example of but its not like every big Florida program isn't still playing their top athletes. image Have you ever read the full story behind the SMU football scandal? Pretty interesting.....started with two then-current football players holding up the secretary for the football player's paychecks and not worrying about the consequences since they knew SMU couldn't do anything about it or the news would leak out all the way to the ex-Governor of Texas behing behind the whole thing, Bill Clements.

When I played at SMU I believe we had a DT come from Big Sandy and he set the state record for squat with like 865lbs. He ended up snapping his leg in the workout room squating 750lbs. It sure made a loud pop! image

  • "That's Cubs and World Series trivia. The Red Sox..."

With those two teams in the same sentence with "World Series," that's why they call it TRIVIA.
  • I wonder how competitive the Cubs and Red Sox would be in the minor league world series?

You're killing me man. I look at it this way. We all vow to live until we see our teams win the Championship. I've seen the Flyers, Sixers, Bronco's, and Tar Heels win Championships already. The Sox keep me motivated to stay healthy for years to come.

You stinkin' Yankee fans have got one foot in the grave. Goodriddance.

  • That's funny!

Actually I'm a lifelong Red's fan so I haven't had much to cheer about for the past 25 years or so. I'm sure that you probably weren't quite as excited about the 75 series as I was.image

But I'm definitely not a Yankee fan.

Hey, I grew up as a fan of the Pirates, I would have killed myself by now, if I hadn't moved to Florida and become a Marlins' fan! image
