Does this card look short?

image

the top right card. looks short compared to the other Parkies pictured. any thoughts?

  • Admittedly, I know nothing about this set, but that does look wrong. The Topps card in the scan obviously utilizes a different insert, but the 3 Parkies have the same insert. The top and bottom borders of the card in question do look short compared to the other two cards. In your experience with the set, do the cards vary much in size? That should tell you if this card "slipped through" the grading process.

  • the card is being sold be gerry's sportscards (chartzride), who has an impeccable reputation as far as i'm concerned. if it did slip through the cracks at PSA, i doubt it was altered in any way by the seller.

  • It looks short but it's already holdered so it's safe. If the price is equal to what you'd find elsewhere for the same grade I'd keep looking.

Gerry is usually high so my guess is this card isn't a bargain. Plus, the top of the card (or right side, depending on how you look at it) looks pretty ugly for a 7. I guess it's just toning but I think you could do much better.

If you are referring to the top right card, it is not smaller, it is placed in a larger holder. Look at the top of the holder compared to the one next to it.

It's the same holder as the 1954 Parkies, not the 1961 Topps. The cards is smaller.

Tom, thanks for the advice. it isn't the best looking 7, but its the highest graded ive seen in a year or so of searching.

Ask some of the guys collecting 51 Parkies ie Teemu , Hockeycrd. about Gerry. or take some time and run some serial numbers on some of the cards he has sold before. He usually gets his fair share of evidence of trimming. He is always is great to deal with and provides good service but i have and as well as others listed above returned trimmed cards to him for a refund. He either has the worst luck or a bad eye for spotting trimmed cards >>

i wasn't aware of this. thanks.

I have at least one card (maybe more - I can't remember off hand) from Jason Chartrand at PSA for grading as we speak. I'll let you know how that turns out. I have purchased many raw and graded cards from the Chartrands in the past, both through ebay and private transactions, and I've never had reason to question any of them. We'll see how my recent raw purchases fair with the grader.

Hey, Will, I didn't notice this thread until just now, but want to add that at least with '53-54 Parkies, the height of the cards seems to vary considerably. I'd have to look through my set and count, but I'm guessing that I have about 6 to 10 cards that were slabbed with the soft sleeve because they're shorter than the typical '53 card and probably a few more that have about as much space in the recessed area of the holder as that Plante IA. I, of course, can't rule out with 100 percent certainty that they're not trimmed, but I'm assuming they all have the original factory cut. I'd also bet that this card is the same size it was when it left the factory.

I certainly have never bought any cards that were oversized from him.
  • I wouldn't worry about it being shorter. Cutting of the sheets of cards back in the 50's and 60's weren't exactly a science so some cards can be shorter or longer depending on the cut and not necessarily trimmed. I've seen stacks of 1961 Fleer basketball where some cards are bigger than others, I'm sure it's similar in other editions.

  • Anybody notice that the lower left card is a Jankowski (#79) in a Dewsbury (#78) holder? image

Good eye Ken. The precise labeling of PSA strikes again. This week PSA sent my 1909 E95 Philadelphia Christy Matheson back to me labeled "1911 T206 - White Cap". Needless to say it's on the way back to California.
