Are population data more skewed for key dates?

We know that population numbers are inaccurate because of people trying to cross to a higher grade, and then crossing back when it doesn't work out.
Do you think that this is more pronounced in the case of key date coins? Would, for instance, the numbers be farther off for mint state 1877 Indian Head cents than they would be for mint state common date Indians? Do you consider the auction archives to be a better indication of the availability of a particular coin than the population reports?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
