What's the screwiest PCGS price guide example you've seen??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,330 ✭✭✭✭✭
Was looking up the price of a 1898 IHC today. Usually the jump from 65R to 66R is pretty reasonable (2-4X) even if incorrect. Look at this line:

41 1898 RD - - - - 46 105 196 365 3000 16500

Price jumps from 365 in 65R (crazily low) to 3000 in 66R (way too high) to $16,500 in 67R (who knows if that's high or low). The pop. in 66R is 40, a higher pop. than some of the later date IHC's with a guide price of $1650!image

What gives??

Lakes: I have a MS-67RD that would knock your socks off! Makes all of the NGC MS-68RD ones look like MS-63RD in comparison.

I would be amazed to see a real MS-68RD. It cannot possibly exist. The coin was so poorly struck on the reverse it is nearly impossible to imagine one really existing.

NGC killed their reputation when they mass graded those coins.

Yeah, check out the bust draped $ prices. Did you know you can get an XF for less than the cost of a VF? I keep telling my dealer this, but he doesn't believe me...

The PCGS price guide on some Morgan dollar dates is all screwed up, it actually shows some dates in prooflike being worth less than non-prooflikes in the same grade. There are also quite a few other large errors in the Morgan series, but that example is pretty bad.
