Okay, I'll Tell You Why

I'm offering my 1975 Topps set for sale. I've had fun building it. The battles for 9's are getting out of control right now and the interest is high for the set. I don't need to sell it for finances, but if it does, I will likely throw it into a kitchen overhaul/remodel. If you're interested, make an offer, but I'm not desperate, so I won't entertain lowball offers. If it doesn't sell, I'll hold on to it. It's listed on the Vintage Board right now.
Sorry to spam, but I knew someone would end up asking and I'd have to answer.

52 Stars as listed in SMR...many of which are 9's...
+ (608 commons x ((8.39 - 8.00) x ($35 - $10)) + $10)
But that's not an offer on my part.
This gets me thinking. Everbody now is basically a dealer - even if it is selling doubles to help finance other collecting endeavors. What is the one card (or item) you sold, now wish you never sold and could have back?
A few years back, I sold one of the two 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle in GEM MINT 10. It has at least tripled since then, and now would make a nice down payment for a home.
Good luck David, I hope you find a nice home for it....for the right price.
Bought it raw and had it graded myself. It presented like a 7 or 8 but had a tiny, tiny surface wrinkle.
I have yet to see a better copy come up in 4,5, or 6 condition - I've been looking for the past 5 years or so. Sportscards Plus had an 8 a while back but that's too much for my blood.
I like the group of 3000th hit players so that's why I'd want the card back.

First, Vargha's set consists of a large portion of Mike Castaldi's set which, from what I've gathered, was a complete set of high end PSA 8s with a good deal of PSA 9s. If anyone takes that into account, this set should sell for a premium, considering many of the PSA 8 cards most likely look better than many PSA 9s out there. This set would be for the "buy the card, not the holder" collectors.
My set, on the other hand, is and has been a back up set - I pick up cards for this set when I can't find a lot of cards for the other sets that I'm collecting. Don't get me wrong, I really like this set. I just can't see paying a premium for cards that are so readily available. This is the only set that I collect where a strict budget is adhered to. I have accumulated (you could argue that I haven't collected ) 60% of the set with a GPA of 8.09. I imagine that one day I will complete this set with a GPA of of between 8.10 and 8.20. Currently, I have just about every high dollar card in the set in PSA 8 or 9, so I only need the remaining 40% of the commons. I'll be patient and wait for them at my price. I am into the set for a little over $4000 and I can't see spending more than $6500 total once I'm complete. My goal is to complete the set at under $10 per card - I'm currently a little over that, but with all commons to go, it should be no problem.
Again, let me point out that I am "buying the holder and not the card" most of the time (cards from my player sets notwithstanding). I am comfortable with having a PSA 8+ set of 1975 Topps without being too fussy about minor issues. I'll trust PSA grading on this set since it is not a priority of mine.
I didn't mean to offend anyone with this post. I just thought another opinion might be valuable to some who read this.
David has a great set and I wish him the best of luck in getting what he wants for it. It is good to know the history of a set - his GPA most likely does not reflect the true presentation value of the set as a whole.

CHEERS!!
I know that there is a ton of un-graded 75' product out there and lots of stuff still un-openened, but as my grandfather once told me "you cant go wrong by buying quality".
Good luck with the sale, It will be interesting to see where this bad boy lands.

<< <i>However, one factor you may not have included in your transaction is postage and insurance costs involved in buying one card at a time. At $2 to $3 per card, you are looking at $1,300- $2,000 in additional costs in acquiring the set. This represents an additional 20-30% outlay that must be factored in. >>
In fairness....who really buys one card at a time when completing a mainstream 70's Topps set. There are usually MULTIPLE auctions listed by any one seller at a time on eBay.
If you are talking about 1953 Bowman Color or 1971 Greatest Moments...then youve got a point.
<< <i>JEB -- That is definitely a good way to build a set as well. However, one factor you may not have included in your transaction is postage and insurance costs involved in buying one card at a time. At $2 to $3 per card, you are looking at $1,300- $2,000 in additional costs in acquiring the set. This represents an additional 20-30% outlay that must be factored in. Whereas by comparison, Mike's set had postage and insurance costs that were less than 1% of the total purchase price. Mine would be in the same category. >>
Vargha,
My numbers do include all shipping costs that I've paid. I have won a number of larger lots, and many times 20, 30, or more individual auctions from the same seller on ebay who then charges me a small shipping fee for all cards. Right now, you are correct - prices are up a bit. That's why you don't see the frequent additions to my set. The last time I placed 20 or so snipes on '75s, I ended up winning only one - I hate when that happens.
