What's more valuable to you?--A set of straight 8's or half 8's half 9's O/C

I'm working on a set of vintage cards and have ended up with many PSA 9's off center. Would most people keep these cards or prefer clean PSA 8's with no qualifiers even though the PSA 9' look great. I'm interested in hearing everyones opinion.

  • I'd prefer all clean 8s. Centering is the biggest issue for me. I can take dinged corners, but centering affects presentation the most for me.

PS. Welcome to the boards! What do you collect?

    (Edited to add PS)
  • Your title says a set of straight 8's, or a set of half 8's and half 9 OC's. That's easy....I'll take the straight 8's. The value is much higher on a straight 8 than a 9 OC.

Now if you're talking straight 9's that are a bit off center....that's another story. I'd take the set that's half and half.
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"
  • Straight 8's, no doubt.
The registery penalizes two points for o/c so from a registery perspective the question is half 8's and half 7's or all 8's.
From a finacial perspective, I have been able to pick up 9 o/c's many times at less than half what a 7 would bring. When I get the chance, I'll do that. What will I do with the cards?? I don't know but nearly free seems a good prices for a card that clean. I won't put them in sets though unless I have immediate plans to upgrade.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • Personally I would rather have a PSA 8 card than a PSA 9 with a O/c qualifier.

I always found it better to have a nicely centered card with somewhat nice corners than an off center one with sharp corners.

If you took a look at recent ebay transactions you will see that the O/c qualifier is almost worse than death or taxes when it comes to selling your item via auction.

PS- Are you the same Cisco that has had numerous hit records out in the last couple of years or just merely the owner of CISCO???????

No, I think that's Sisqo that had the "hit" songs; maybe he's the Cisco Kid (was a friend of mine?).

    Depends on set.

    1954 Wilson Franks -- I would take the 9 O/C's in a heartbeat
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I'm concerned with centering, so I'd go with a clean 8.
  • straight 8's for me when talking PSA 8 vs. PSA 9OC.

  • Probably straight 8's if they look better. I can sacrifice corner wear for nicely-centered, beautifully presented cards.
  • One who's doing the set registry would say all 8's because the methodology really kills you
to have an OC card - a PSA 9 OC counts only as much as a PSA 7 NQ ie a 2 grade hit for a qualifier.

(Was wondering if my 1967 complete set didn't sell because it had a lot of PSA 8 OCs and
maybe all NMs would be better?)image

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
  • i'd take straight 8 any day of the week. a 9 oc presents worse than most 5's that are 50/50 all around. with BECKETT a badly OC card would hardly grade higher than a 5 . i avoid OC cards like the plague,
    but i would take a T206 wagner in a 9 oc.

Cisco - as a general matter, an 8 is going to look nicer than a 9(OC) (and be worth more registry points and probably more money). However, you have to decide on a card-by-card basis whether the price difference is worth it to you to get the PSA 8.

Cisco , Nothing but straight 8's or 9's for me ! Just recieved my first o/c qualifier on my most recent submission - a 1964 Topps ST. Louis Cardinals Team Card - 8 o/c ......... ouch ..... that hurt ..... will not be able to enter it into my Set Registry , as I avoid QUALIFIERS LIKE THE PLAGUE ........... centering is very important to me ....... much better eye appeal as so many have already mentioned ! Will buy an occasional ' 7 ' if the centering is nice ! ..........Robby
