How Do You Spot a Fake Gretzky OPC Rookie?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2786222519&category=23849&sspagename=STRK:MEBWA:IT&rd=1

There is a Gretzky OPC rookie card on eBay now that I'm interested in, but I'm scared to death to bid high on it considering all the counterfeits. It doesn't seem to have a rough cut, but I know that doesn't necessarily mean it is not real. The seller mentions the dot on the shoulder, but I'd have to assume there are counterfeits out there with the dot too. Any Gretzky rookie experts out there who can shed some light???

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

  • Any high priced card you should buy graded by a reputable company.

But I will say the seller looks good.

There's a reference in the Sportscard Counterfeit Detector pg. 126 where he states there are some fakes that can look pretty good by the naked eye. But with a loop many of the design elements on the front of the fake are composed of tiny dots, rather than the solid lines and colors of the genuine - also the ice in the photo can be seen as clean and white in the genuine but in the fake there are thousands of tiny blue dots visible. Of course this is based on a fake he has seen and analyzed; that's not to say that someone can't produce one better today with a laser printer. This is Vol. I and I can't find the updated version. I agree with Sox, the seller looks real good; what if you emailed him to see how he sends his card and if it can be viewed and returned if you are not satisfied?

I agree the seller seems legits. But in e-mails to me, he said he knows nothing about hockey cards, so he could be unknowingly selling a fake. He also said if the winning bid was like $500 - $750, it would be buyer beware, no returns. If it got higher, he would issue a refund should the card turn out to be a fake.

If you're crazy enough to spend that kind of money on a card that is well know for fakes than you deserve what you get. High grade PSA cards are the same price range!!!

  • The Gretzky's without the yellow dot use to be the best way to spot the fakes. Now they have fakes with the yellow dot out there without the counterfit stamp. I've owned some and they look pretty good. I must say that this guy probably knew the basics about Gretzky's (look for the yellow dot) and was had. The card looks too good to be true.....it would be graded if it was a legit card.

    Andy,

Given the proliferation of fake Gretzky's that have popped up over the past year, I wouldn't risk bidding on this card unless you
tell the seller that the card would be submitted immediately to PSA, and he would agree to refund your purchase price if it was
    deemed to be fake.

    Good Luck,
    Ray
