Ashburn - 1949 or 1950?

I have a self-created dilemma. I own a nicely centered 1950 Bowman Ashburn, PSA 8. There is a nicely centered 1949 Bowman, PSA 6, on ebay right now. I could sell the '50, add some $ and purchase the rookie card, but ......... can't decide (I don't collect either set - just Phils). I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I'd keep the 8. You'll miss that card. It is a nice 8. The 6 looks nice. But looks could be deceiving.
What is that make on the back of his uniform? Is that a bubble or flaw in the card? Also, there
are a couple of print marks I don't like on the 6. Keep the higher end card. Wait for another
    RC.

    just my .02 cents

    good luck,

  • Thanks, Aconte. Always a tough call for me - lower grade rookie card vs. higher grade second year.
  • Very tough call. I'm a big fan of the RC of HOF'ers so I know where you're coming from. Some second year cards look inherently better than their rookie counterparts (single photo vs sharing the RC with other rookies). Your 8 looks pretty awesome. Although RC's are pretty sweet to have and that 6 looks pretty nice from the scan. So in all, I have no clue what you should do. Maybe get the rookie, check it out and if you don't like it, resell it.
  • I'm a HUGE fan of the 1950 Bowman set.

If you have a nice 8 of Ashburn, I'd keep it... or sell it to me! image

In ideal world, I'd say, get BOTH!

  • onegaucho, my fetish with the ridiculous T201s keeps me from keeping both. It's a nice one - see below

Gatorbait - I would stick with the 1950. A much better card regardless of grade. I have a beautiful high end 1955 PSA 8 (from Marc's collection) that I thought about parting with and I am glad I didn't ...
collecting various PSA and SGC cards
  • Thanks for the comments - I let the '49 go by.......
