How much should a 1923 MS68FB Merc go for?

The Heritage auction for a 1923-P MS68FB Merc was bid up to 26K more or less, but it appears it did not sell. This is a pop 1/0 coin. How much do we think the reserve is on this coin? There were 6 bidders (I dont know if there are duplicates in there or not) listed for the auction. My pockets will never be this deep, but it makes you wonder about the price level for a high grade coin that is not particularly rare other than condition.

  • IMO there is one person who would buy this coin. When he is willing to buy it and the price he feels comfortable I am sure it will sell.

    My 2 Cents:

If the coin was a pop 1/0 Lincoln Cent from the early 1920's, it is possible the coin could command $40k or more right now. A Walker - even more? A Buffalo Nickel - lord only knows! A Peace Dollar - WOW! An SLQ pop 1/0 from the early 1920's - A TON.

But, this is a Mercury Dime so even $26k appears too much? It is a bit surprising the series has deteriorated down to being the only denomination of its genre not worthy of the "big bids" for the best of the best condition rarities. Surprising indeed.

Mitch - You failed to mention what a pop 1 Washington quarter would bring or did you forget about them?

ps - I didn't undestand why Lincolns are inferior to Buffalos, walkers and SLQ's?

Stewart: How could I discuss what a Wash quarter would bring when discussing coins from the 1920's?

MY COMMENT ABOUT THE LINCOLN WAS FOR A "P" MINT COIN!! THANK YOU STEWART - IF WE ARE DISCUSSING A POP 1/0 LINCOLN FROM THE 1920"s AND IT IS AN "S' MINT COIN - WELL, LET'S JUST WAY WE ARE TALKING "SIX FIGURES"!!

And this is a bad thing because... ?? It's still a great series. How much would a 1923 in MS67FB go for? How much of a difference is it? I think "Condition Rarity," except in some cases, can be overrated. I mean, yeah the '45 in FB is a real rarity, but I could probally go and get coins of the same years in 7 holders that look just as good as a Pop 1/0 "Condition Rare" 8... and just b/c it's a Pop 1/0 at PCGS, doesn't mean there aren't other great coins out there that are in 7 holders or raw, that could grade an 8... it's all subjective, and in the higher MS grades, 1 minor tick could change someone's opinion on if it's a 7 or an 8...

  • Stewart- What would a pop one Lincoln from the early 20's bring? In fact, I believe you own the pop one 1923 in 68RD. That sounds like the perfect comparison piece. I am making you a sight unseen offer right now of $40,000 for the "inferior Lincoln" coin. Interested?

Has anyone here viewed this coin in person? I know many of the heavy hitters read these boards and I would love to hear an opinion on the coin. Is it really a 68, pop 1/0 coin or are we just talking plastic here. Because it is an active auction for serious money (to me at least) there may be some reluctance to say something positive until after the auction, but if that is the case a comment after things closed would be appreciated.

This is one of the beauty's of this board. Small time collectors can get insight into what makes the top end of the market work.

Oreville: Didn't one recently sell at auction for the low $2k's? Yes, apples to oranges, it is all crazy. Throw patterns into the equation and the Seated quarter doesn't even look that good anymore image

FYI, this coin is now up on eBay with an opening bid of $28K and a BIN of $30,240. The BIN price seems to be 8% above the opening bid. Given what has gone on so far, I doubt it will sell here.
