German coin countermarked

If you are into countermarks, this one is for you:

Hamburg 2 mark countermarked for Azores

This must be a quite unusual piece. I have never seen a similar coin or even heard of one. Does anyone know the story behind this countermarking?

BTW, the seller kruemelmoonster has some quite interesting German coins. His feedback is not that good but people don't seem to be afraid to bid on his stuff.

That's pretty interesting, but I'm going to have to remain a skeptic.. if it stays under $20 I might bid, but if it stays under $20 then I'll know it's fake.

In Krause's description of this countermark in the Azores section:
"... This countermark has been heavily counterfeited and should be approached with caution. ..."

I've never seen a credible one with a date this late... that and the coin looks to be in better condition than the CM...

Thanks for pointing it out though, Marcel.. it is neat whatever it turns out to be!

Not only is it a late date, but the countermark is unusually crisp, round-edged and apparently with even depth. Somehow a late fresh stamp and great care in stamping don't encourage me to think it's authentic.

Smallish picture, too, almost as if he didn't want us to see the C/S that well.

Neat piece, but I'm afraid I'm as suspicious as these other cynical ones.

  • You are right - the picture is not all that great.

We'll just have to wait and see how much people want to pay for it.
