Grading advice on this george IV farthing-pictures improved (I hope)

Please grade this coin and give a me brief step by step as to how you graded it and why.

I apologize for the darkness of the photo's and the bit of fluff(which I was going to remove but after seeing George staring at it so fixedly, I was amused and decided to leave it).

  • Nicely detailed, but lots of flatness in the high points. I'll say GVF for the Brit. graders and XF40 for us Yanks. image

Thanks spinaker-I was going to grade it less than that due to wear on the shield.

The shield may just be weakly struck. I would go with VF/EF on the coin.

  • VF-XF, image is awfully dark to see the detail, but I see some wear on hight points in garment folds of Britania, and on wreath G IV is wearing.

Tough to evaluate with the dark images.....

It is too dark of a picture to grade accurately. I'm sorry. Is there any lustre?

I would say VF20 to VF30 on the Sheldon scale, based on the wear on George and Britannia's heads, and Britannia's knees and shield.

There is just not enough detail in the wreath on the obverse to warrant EF40, IMHO.

I'd give it a nice VF. Some flatness to the hair in front of the ear and the drapery at the neck. General wear on the reverse, I always start with Britannias fingers.

No way is it better than VF.

    Laurent,

I suspect from viewing the pic that it could also use a good acetone or xylol soaking to dissolve and remove the surface oils, etc. Borrow some of the wife's cotton puffs to blot the surfaces after applying the solvent.....my 2 farthings anyway.

Thanks Tbirde for getting me off my buttocks to improve the pictures-I should never have posted them so dark but had just put all photo equipment away-lazyness is a terrible thing.
