I would want to know his feelings about the HOF. He was the best 1st basemen in his era (some may argue otherwise) but his career was ended earlier due to injuries. I thought he'd have a decent chance of getting in the hall but it doesn't look like that anymore, especially with all of the big guys who will be on the ballot in the near future such as ripken, mcgwire, gwynn, etc.
yeah..ask him about the HOF....ask him if he thinks that since koufax got in with less than 200 wins pitching...why he cant get in with less than 500 hr's and 3000 hits....if he had stayed healthy the 3000 would have been attainable for sure.
ASK HIM IF HE WISHES HE COULD HAVE STAYED ONE MORE YEAR (1996 world champion yanks)
Ask him what he thinks about the future of the Yankees. If he thinks what George is doing is good or bad for the club's future. Letting guys who have the chemistry go (Tino, Pettitte, etc.) and signing guys who have the name and/or talent instead.
The question I'd always like to see asked (particularly in a hobby magazine) is if he ever collected cards or memorabilia and if he does/did collect, what is/was his favorite item?
Ask him about his son. A friend at a card show gave me 2 Bowman rookie cards a few months ago, 1 of Mattinglys kid the other of Tony Gwynn' son. I instantly felt real old. I'm sure he would gush talking about his sons career...jay
Nah, ask him if he ever collected any of his own stuff. I know if I ever made it big, I probably won't but hey, I still have some time , I would buy up everything with my picture on it. Perhaps his thoughts on the Pete Rose epidemic?...
I seem to remember some controversy regarding his facial hair. Perhaps he refused to shave even though the Yankees didn't allow mustaches...or something along those lines. If someone can corroborate this then I would ask him why he fought the team policy.
If you really do have an interview coming up, you really do need to ask some good questions in order not to embarass him or yourself.
You can certainly do good by asking about his son and what he has taken from Donny Baseball.
Ask him his hitting philosophy and what he wants to give the Yankees this up coming season. Ask him what he looks for in a hitter and what advice he can give to someone like Jeter, Giambi, Williams, etc. How can he make better hitters out of them. Something open ended.
In addition to his hitting philosophy, you can go more into depth about how he approached the game when he was a player and what adjustments he made after Wade Boggs came on the team and why. (he did listen to Boggs about drawing more walks, I just want him to elaborate on that if you also think it might be interesting to ask).
You can certainly ask about Pete Rose and the HOF rules, what his take on it is.
Ask him about future aspirations like baseball commissioner and what he thinks of that position and overall contribution to baseball.
A few years ago, Mattingly was invited by the democrats to run for a regional office. Ask what he thinks about such gestures and if he could ever consider that say 10-20 down the line. You can add what his take on Arnold Schwarzenegger is. I mean, both men are type cast as being something else, one an action hero, and the other, a ball player. I think both men are so much more than that one-dimensional identity prescribed to them. They are both leadership material, in different respects of course.
One thing to remember about Mattingly, he is very humble and does not like to draw attention to himself or his accomplishments. So, asking about his son, the Pete Rose issue, his hitting approach, team goals, working with Torre, etc are all intelligent and does not put him in the spot light. Asking wether he should belong in the HOF or not is too childish and he already addressed that question. One has to be original.
Just my 3 cents worth.

I am such a big fan of his that I probably would be too nervous to conduct the interview myself. Perhaps and perhaps not. But being a fan of Schwarzenegger too and actually standing three feet away from him made me speechless and I froze up. He was on his way out with two body guards, but had I reacted quicker, I certainly could have had a few words in German with him. We live and learn I guess.

I know that athletes and celebrities are just normal people but whenever I talk to them I get so nervous all I can say is "hey can you sign this" even though I have rehearsed great questions that I am going to ask them...stupid!!!

There would not have been a 1996 World Champ Yanks had he stayed.

yeah, ask him how he feels about his son playing the game now, that would be a great conversation starter

I think DG should conduct the interview, very well spoken!

Check your PM.
By the way, what is the special occassion that you are interviewing him and how did you make contact?
<< <i>Ask him if he regrets not kicking the Red Sox A$$ES in the playoffs.

Well, I do interviews for one of my sites that I co-run. I also do celebrity (non-sports interviews). So, it's not a special occassion.
